It’s basically a stripped down TR without the microphone and webcam but it has a better DVD+RW/-RW drive and slightly less weight and slightly better battery life. The one nice thing that many of you have been wanting is that it has an optional port replicator dock. It also comes with a much smaller AC Adapter…it would be nice if it was compatible with the TR or S series (which use the same AC adapter) as it’s much more travel friendly.
Unfortunately, not much else has changed and it’s still using the “old” 855GME chipset to run everything including the “Extreme 2” graphics. So, in some sense…it’s a TR in a different shell.
I’ll have a full preview up on it tomorrow when I wake up. Oh, and there’s a new Type B model as well…
It looks like a new business oriented model…so, not something most of us are looking at…also, it’s bigger starting with a 14” screen. It basically looks like the new “Z” series.
Looks to me like they’re just making the TR look like the rest of their notebooks. I guess the Apple-like design of the TR and the legacy webcam from the Picturebook are history. I’ll mourn the former, but not the latter. As “pudgy” and flawed as the TR design is, I don’t think this is a suitable replacement - from an esthetic point of view.

You dont see the cam as a selling point?
Erik
It isn’t for serious people, but then again Erik, remember, most people are idiots. Basically, it’ll go like this. *OOH! Built in web cam! That other one is faster..but this one has a BUILT IN WEB CAM! Let’s buy it! *
Smart move on Sony’s ‘Cheesy but workable’ selling policy.

I use mine all the time for webcasts…initially its what drew me to the Picturebook series.
Spec-wise, the type T is only marginally better than my TR, which is coming up on one year old. I thought of a mini type S when seeing those pics, but it doesn’t carry the two-tone design as well. The curves and bevels of the TR also look much nicer than the harder edges of the T. Then again, things might change when I see it in person, I wasn’t too crazy about the S at first and now I have one sitting next to my TR.

lol, I am starting to like the type “S” more and more everytime I see it…
Personally I think the webcam is a nice addition. I don’t use it currently but anticipate two or three possible future applications. I’ve never used the VGA, modem or ethernet ports either. The point is that it’s ALL there if and when I need it. IMHO The only abject failing of the US version of the TR is the lack of bluetooth. Had I not found this site and gr00vys BT upgrade, I’m not sure I’d own a TR today.
Go read the Wishlist threads. For every person who can do without the camera there’s an avid user. Other than faster, lighter and decent speakers most of of us don’t have a lot of wants; video out, docking and a few other odds and ends. Few other notebooks and none in its class offer such a broad standard feature set. I’d hate to see Sony trash that.

I am sure the will had BT to there next line. But, it still doesn’t explain why the didn’t give the U.S. in the first place
Rants:
It still doesn’t have a right Fn key
Raves:
Optical drive is on the side, different available colors (I’m a sucker for that kinda stuff even if I just end up getting something like black or silver), comes witha backup utility…
