just placed my order..thought i would share this code here before i start selling it on ebay for more feedbacks.
i would like to know if there is any GPS PC Card instead of bluetooth. i love the wireless and all that, but PC card seems more reliable than bluetooth. if so, how much? thanks
[quote author=“linc”][quote author=“gameson”]but PC card seems more reliable than bluetooth.
can you provide facts to back up that statement?
Just stands to reason…the PC card is physically inside the PC, no loss of connection.
However, I think the reception on the BT GPS vs PCMCIA GPS would favor the BT because it is away from the PC and therefore can transmit better, but I could be wrong.
Either way, I only picked it up because it was dirt cheap.
i understand the phyical connection vs the wireless part. i was hoping for data that would illustrate the difference in reliabiity between the two ..perhaps its not significant enough to notice the difference.. i brought mine because it was cheap and its wireless..
physical connection doesn’t always = no loss of connection. one can argue that the pc card have a chance to eject from the pc as to where a bt connection has no physical link to disconnect. so it can really go both ways..

Also, I think BT maxes out at 720Kbps whereas the PCCard is 132MB/sec (Cardbus).
Regardless of how reliable you consider a bluetooth connection vs a device installed in the PCMCIA port…
You’re discussing a GPS, the device must see the sky. So unless you plan on sitting the TR on the dashboard, the rear deck or holding it out the window, you’ll need to either remote the GPS or provide a remote antenna.

BTW, I’ve found BT to be very reliable.
Yeah, thats what I said which was why I thought the BT would be better because it was away from the PC.
Also why I got the remote antenna, I can leave the GPS in the glove-box.
I know, Eric, but the whole tangental discussion of reliability, jostled cards and data rates made me laugh (in a kindly way).
As for the opening salvo, gameson, what’s the big deal? People use BT every day for internet and voice communication. The GPS isn’t doing anything mission critical. It’s just a little radio receiver that talks to the TR over a virtual serial port and reports location once a second.
[quote author=“invisiblefly”]And then what kind software do you guys use with GPS?
I saw the one from microsoft but i dont know how’s it performs.
It comes with software. I’ve no idea how the included software stacks up against the others out there. Delorme, MS, and TomTom seem to have most of the markets. Software has worked well for me. It may be a bit convoluted for trip planning, but tell it where you want to go and it’ll start directing you there. You can have it display a map of any of the scheduled waypoints and add waypoints for rest stops. Besides entering addresses, you can find banks, gas stations, parks, dining etc.
The device itself is compatable with most, if not all, of the software available. There’s a GPS standard data string they all use and understand.
The deep deal on this unit is likely because a map update is due. Not necessarily a big deal and the price is certainly right. I paid two bills and have no regrets.
