[quote author=“OnMyWayUp”]do people not realize that America was founded under God?
Normally I’d let this God-fest go, but this statement deserves an answer. It’s false. The Treaty of Tripoli was ratified in 1797 by the Senate and signed by John Adams. Go to Article 11. It’s stated rather explicitly. Then read Article VI of the Constitution.
The irony of this is that John Adams was the most religious of the Founding Fathers, although at one point very late in his life he wrote “This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it!” Thomas Paine was outright hostile to Christianity. Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and James Madison were not religious as you would understand it. They did believe in God, but were not fans of organized religion, hence the First Amendment to the Constitution. Judging by your past comments, I doubt either of you would call any of them “Christian”.
