It is absolutley no problem to change the keyboard software to german, french or whateverlanguageyouwantandwinsdowsisproviding. Either you select all the langauges you need when you install windows or you later right click on the small langauge icon (with EN if you are working with english keybaord) in the lower right side of the screen (if it is not shown it is under start / settings /stystem). There you can add german as a language and when you select it you can write all the german letters like ö (oe) or ß (ss). The location of the letters is the same as on a german keyboard the letter is just not printed on it. We regularly do this for our customers and the notebooks we import. For certain notebooks it is easy the even change the entire keyboard (e.g. the TR series9) but I think that it will be very difficult to do this for the X505 due to the very small form factor (and I am a little afraid to open it)
Please keep in mind that when you reinstall the system for a japanese notebook that for the TR series the keyboard is not identified correctly by Windows. Windows detects a standard 102 microsoft keyboard but you will have to change it manually to 106 Japanese keyboard.
Why is it that Japan always gets the good options and features, while people elsewhere (especially the US) gets screwed over? I don’t see why they can’t have the same equipment available in the US. If it’s a price issue, then they should offer some of the “US version” but also have the better version available as well for the people that would rather pay more and get a better product.

I was talking about the physical keys, not the software behind it.
Arghh! Damm it I really should take some more time to read. Sony Vaio if you are interested I can check wether I can get you a german keyboard from the source we get our other Sony keyboards from. As written I have to admit we have never changed a X505 keyboard though before, so you would be on your own there. However I am sure tifosiv122 knows a way (and I would gladly assist you).
