In addition to that…and I like to pound this one down everyone’s throat…is USB2 is a dumb interface that requires a lot of CPU attention during transfers. In fact, USB2 won’t work without a host CPU at all.
Firewire is a point to point interface that can act without any host intervention meaning uses little to no CPU resources at all during transfers. So, USB2 requires 20-30% CPU in order to reach the peak “theoretical” 480Mbps. If the system can’t give 20-30% then transfer rates plummet. Firewire does not have this limitation.
