Hey all, I’m new to this website, but I have a small problem. I just purchased a Sony TR3A from NewEgg.com. Seeing 512mb of RAM as being kind of weak I decided to go to shop.kingston.com and purchase a 512mb module. I followed the menus and selected the RAM for the Sony TR3A (model number on the RAM was U101/512). I’m guessing the U101 must use the same RAM as the TR3A. I ordered the RAM and received it. I read the directions very carefully, and installed the RAM. However, when I tried to boot the computer all I got was a black screen! I tried switching around the RAM to change the position. I also tried using the new 512mb RAM by itself (it wouldn’t boot, just a black screen). So is there something I need to do? When I bought this off of NewEgg.com it said it was able to be upgraded to 1 GB of RAM. Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

The full part number is KSY-U101/512 and works fine in my TR3. You likely have a defective module, call Kingston. Since it’s new, they should pick up shipping both ways.
It might be too late, but here’s one of the reasons we regulars love this forum:

you sure you got the right memory?
tr uses 172-pin microDIMMs.. the only 172-pin microDIMMs on neweggs are these
all the kingstion 512 modules newegg.com carries are all 200-pin..

The only other thing I can suggest is to try both sticks in the opposite slots, but it looks like you have a bad stick and must RMA it. If it makes you feel any better, I got a bad stick of RAM from Kingston as well. I’d be interested in knowing whether they will let you bill the shipping back to them. I had to send back the bad stick on my dime, which kind of pissed me off. :? On the bright side, we usually go on a cruise with the slush fund money.

I raised hells fury on the phone with kingston. They are sending my piece out today for Overnight delivery, as for the shipping…. With enough yelling they are sending me a check for $10.00 with the piece of RAM. LOL. I did have to give them my credit card number incase I don’t send back the defective RAM within 10 days.

Haha. There was a time back when most posts were answered within ten minutes..but between Drachen, Truthseeker, linc and dbs, I think we’ve gotten it down to about 30 seconds. What’s up with you guys?

I’ve been wanting a small notebook for a long while (2 or 3 years). I fell head over heels for the CVN (Sony Picturebook), but alas it was fading out just when I had the money to purchase her. Then a little while later the TR series grabbed my eye. I tested it at J&R’s Electronics in Manhattan and I was hooked. I believe it was the TR1 that I had saw. I just love subnotebooks, they rock. Oh yeah, and I received my ram from kingston today. I’m now powered by one Gb of ram, woohoo. Next project is to install Win XP Pro, but I saw plenty of threads on that, so no need to take up another thread for that. Thank you all.
