What was your first computer, When was it and how was it. 

  I got my first computer on 1993 when i was eight years old. It was 486DX2 66Mhz!!! ram 400MB HD. It was wonderful!!(at that time). I missed it. JK  

Toshiba Satellite.  P1 75 mhz. 650 MB hard drive.  8 MB ram.  Slow as molasses.

original Apple ][ around 78-79 and i still have and it works. 48K total!

My first exposure to computers was the TRS-80 with the awesome tape drives that would take like 30-40 minutes to load one program. Awesome.

The first computer my family ever bought that I mostly used was an IBM PC XT 8086 8Mhz with a whopping 640KB! It had a voluminous 5MB (ESDI drive i think) hard disk and not one but TWO 5.25” 360KB floppy disk drives. I suspect the large case weighed a good 60lbs.

My first computer that I got when I started college was an insane 386DX-33Mhz with 4MB of RAM. I even went overboard and bought the Intel 387 Math Co-Processor for it. It had a 340MB IDE hard disk, a 3.5” 1.44MB floppy disk drive, and a TSENG ET4000 2MB video card (remember them?). I eventually upgraded the memory to something ridiculous like 8MB of RAM and then added a TekRAM caching IDE controller for it with a crazy 4MB of RAM (taken from the original 4MB). That was the fastest 386 machine ever!!!

Our family bought a Apple II+ with a color screen (whooh) and a legal character printer (not dot matrix - at the time it was a big deal).

It was something like 64k RAM with 2 5.25 drives.  I remember it around $3,500!!

My first was a TI-99/4A. Who needs magnetic storage when you’ve got solid state carts?  :D

Apple IIgs, purchased from my elementary school’s surplus sale. Being able to play Cannon Fodder and Number Munchers at home was one of the highlights of my youth.

Mine was an Amstrad, with no hard drive, as i said in an earlier post you had a floppy disc to start it and a floppy disc to write to. All dos stuff. I guess soon no one will know how to use dos.
My next was a hp 386 with 4 mb of ram. I upped it to 8mb but it cost me a fortune to do that. I got brave and installed a modem and then eventually a cd rom drive and sound card and speakers. Software was a nightmare, tons of floppies and that was just dos.
What is amazing is that was still only 10 years ago.

Ha ha - my first was an Acorn Electron, back in the early 80’s.

Eventually had a 3.5” diskette and all the upgrade going on it

Commodore Vic-20, 3K of RAM.  No tape drive. No disk drive.

After punching in a game or a program, I’d have to leave the thing on all night so it wouldn’t dump it - unfortunately it was plugged into the same outlet as the wall switch lamp, so my parents were constantly inadvertantly wiping out all my work.

C64 - 1982 I was 2 years old.

My first real ‘PC’ was a:

Packard Bell 80286 33MHZ not sure the year…

First Pentium was a 100MHZ PC that I built myself…

First Notebook was a Toshiba Satelite Pentium 75MHZ (410 CDT I think)

First PDA - USR Pilot 1000 - The week it was released.

The first computer I ever spent serious time hacking on was Commodore XT—4.77 Mhz CPU and a 360k 5 1/4 floppy. Later we added a 20 MB hard drive and boy, we were in heaven! It had a cool Hercules graphics card with 2 colors and probably weighed 25 kilos.

The first box I ever *owned* outright was a 386SX16 with a 40MB hard drive and a VGA card, which at the time was such hot shit and cost about 3 grand. I eventually overclocked it to 20Mhz and it was bad-ass fast ) I was lucky that the store was out of Commodore 128’s the day I wanted to get one—I kept saving and got the 386 which was in retrospect one of the smartest coincidences of my life.

this shows my relative youth…my first computer was a mac color classic 4/40mb steup with a screen as small and sharp as the TR’s

ahh what a great topic.. full of fond memories..

I had also the C64 but i had experienced amigas 500, amstrad zx spectrum before actually my brother return from usa with a hidden in his luggage an IBM PC-XT in 1983 to avoid customs taxes.  At that time i was 12 years old and I thought this was the best thing that happent to my life since that time.  I couldn’t get my fingers off of it, effective immediately at that time I was sleeping 2-3 hours later than usual.

DOS & basic was a mystery for me, i could not believe that interaction i had with the machine and the logic behind it.  What a revolution !!

You know, at that time such a computer did not exist in my country and later when they came, they cost 10 times more than the ones in USA.  It is a shame that some governments do not motivate computer literacy and raise huge burdens such as taxes etc.
