Actually the machine spec’d out pretty well for the era and the price was right. I was in a position where I didn’t want to build my own and had one of those ‘instant gratification” moments.

At least Sony finally figured out how to build a PC a few other wannabees like AT&T never did.

When Sony first came out they were priced way above the competition…couldn’t be considered right by any means. Either you got yours on a deep sale or we are talking about 2 different years.

I didn’t compare the TR’s screen against the IBM.  But I tell you what when I went in to comp usa to buy my first notebook it took me all of about 5 seconds to figure out which one I wanted.

The sony TR was in a different class then all the other notebooks.  Even compared against the powerbook 12” it just looked so much less bulk and like a newer technology then the rest of the competion.

And yes Comp Usa did’n't have a full line of sub notebooks to compare against.  To this date I still believe the TR is the best for me and I adore it.  I wouldn’t trade it not even for a type “s”

It’s been awhile… In late ‘93-94 I was so burned out on computers that I took a three year hiatus. Traveled a lot and did a number of fun things I’d been putting off. Wandered into a chain store fairly early in ‘97 and ended up looking at the PCs. They had a sale on the Sonys and, originally just goofing off, I got ‘em to throw in a closeout Epson laser printer and discount a Sony Multisync monitor (not the cutesy Vaio model). It was a P1 MMX 200 if I recall correctly. Didn’t steal it but didn’t feel burned, decent.

How old is your TR? I’ve had them side by side and the TR screen blows the IBMs away IMO.Erik

My TR was purchased in November 2003. The screen is brighter than my old Compaq laptop and brighter than my girlfriend’s Sony 505 so I do agree the TR screen is nice.

But the IBM screen was brighter and whiter - I stared at the two screens side by side for 40 hours over 5 days.

He has a compact size unit,like our TR sub notebook.

personally, I’m not into ibm at all.
my cousin had one, but had to return it twice to fix the screen, lots of dead pixels, and also, I think, optical driver didn’t work….
he ended up returning that thing and buying a toshiba….

That’s interesting.  Did you have the sony on the brightess level?  And what brightness was the IBM.  I never thought the IBM screen would look brighter and whiter.

As I metioned before when I was a compusa and compared the TR against about 20-30 notebooks.  By far the TR looked visually like it had the best screen.  Something that I really like about it was the clear kinda glassey coat on it.  I am not sure what the technical name is. 

But It made it almost seem like a plasma type of screen.

The TR brightness level was all the way up. I didn’t chek the IBM - certainly would have been funny if it wasn’t all the way up.

I was surprised myself. I own the TR, not the IBM so I wanted the TR to be better.
