after system booting (in win xp), sometimes win xp recognises it immediately at one try, but sometimes it says that the USB device is malfunctioned and after i powercycle the external hdd for second try, winxp recognises it again. after that one time malfunctioned, i can plug in and out as many times as i wish, or powercycled the HD as many times as i want, and i won’t see that malfunctioned message anymore.
also for consideration, the HD is BRAND NEW. it’s hitachi 200 GB 8 MB cache and i use the external box with ibm 30 gb before and never have this problem before.
sometimes i wonder if it’s the Hitachi HD, but it’s brand new HD. i can’t refund the HD cause i took out the UPC for rebate, all i can do is exchange with the same hitachi HD. if it’s the box, i use it with my 30 gb one and never experience the problem before. the pc is out of question cause if it is, i will experience the same thing with other usb devices, i.e mouse, but i plug in my mouse and no problems.
btw, which is a better HD, seagate or hitachi? if seagate, i can buy a new one at local frys, exchange the hitachi then sell it on ebay or something. if hitachi, then i can exchange and see if the new one still produce the same problems. personally i don’t have any problems with hitachi before. i use ibm, which is basically the same as hitachi for 4 years (that 30 gb one) and never experienced a single problem ever.
if i opt to exchange, i will have problems to transfer my 60 gb data from hitachi to new drive since i only have one pc and the pc only have 18 gb left. it takes time to swap it back and forth for about three times to transfer all the files into the new HD. even with usb 2.0, it takes some time to transfer 18 gb and i have to do it 3 times which basically ruin one of my weekend day.
