I’ve never personally hooked up dsl.  I have a friend asking me for my help.  SBC wants to charge her $200 just for coming out to her house.

Anyway here I go. Do I have to have a computer always connected to the modem since it I believe or thought has to dial through to connect unlike cable.

Or is that not true, can I have it hooked up to a wireless router and no computer at all? :shock:

you can ahve the router dail for you, but your computer needs to be connected to the modem first so the router can see how to dial for you, then just plug the modem into the router, adn the router will do the rest. (assuming you get the dsl working properly on the computer) Best advice: follow the instructions on the cds that come with the dsl modem and the router.

Thats what I think DSL sucks.  I looked in the box it came with.  No instructions> No Software.

I guess I’ll just plug it in and hope for the best.  I was wondering if the technology could have changed and its like cable modems.  That you just have to plug the things in?

Cables modems need to be activated so the cable company knows what that particular modem’s MAC adress is, so you still ahve to call and ahve them activated once. dsl, you ahve to ahve a user name and pasword to log on, usually it is to your dsl provider’s hostname, such as my sbc one was sbcglobal.net, and you can create your login and password when setting the thing up. call your provider’s tech support and DEMAND to be given instructions on how to do it yourself.

its really not that hard. you do need a computer to configure the router first..however a constant computer to router connction is not required for the router to stay connected to the modem. the dsl modem & router statys on constantly so you can maintain a constant connection to the broadband service. like hansenen stated..follow the directions. if you can read..you should be able to set it up fine.

Try going to the providers web site. You can often find configuration and setup info. in the tech support area.

The modem normally does the log-in. If you’re using a router, the modem should be set to bridged mode and let the router do the log in. Some providers want to limit you to one PC and require PPP software on the PC itself. You can defeat this by using a router.

Try hooking the modem to the computer with the eithernet cable (phone line disconnected) and open a browser. If you’re lucky it will take you to the setup screens. Othewise you’ll have to find out what IP address the modem setup is located at. (There should be SOME documentation with the modem)

Thanks guys.  I guess I’ll just try it and see what happens.  Kinda stupid they didn’t send any instructions though. :cry:

Would at least expect a hunk of paper with the modem. Did they send filters for her phones?  or, unlikely as it is, did they install a special line for the modem?

should really call them up. i’m with sbc dsl as well. my broadband kit arrived complete with line filters, modem, instructions as well as software/drivers. 

Maybe my friend is not telling the whole truth.  And she lost the software and paperwork.  Oh joy. lol :shock:

yeah..it’ll be a pain to setup with out the software disc that came with it.
