I have the above processer from my old system which mysteriously died on me (I’m pretty sure it was the motherboard that snuffed it).  I was thinking of making a video server for my TV using it and so need to get a new motherboard for it.  My question is… when I was looking for an appropriate motherboard I could only see ones which were labelled Athlon XP and not just athlon.  Is the processor just too old? or will it work on an XP branded motherboard?

I know I probably won’t be able to buy a new motherboard, but I’m willing to get one off ebay if I find the right thing.

In some cases, you might be better off with a new motherboard and a new CPU. The Athlon XPs run cooler and are dirt cheap especially when bundled with a motherboard. Imagine that a Athlon XP 1600+ (1.4GHz) is less than $50 and I’ve seen faster processors bundled with a decent motherboard for less than $90.

I see your point… It just pains me to have that processor just lying around not doing anything… and I don’t think my mum would be impressed if I got another completely new computer!

Yeah but if I were to get a new CPU and MOBO then I’d still have the old CPU left over and I’d still be sat staring at it thinking “I really should do something with that”  :shock:

You can be like my old nerdy flatmate who stuck old CPUs on the dash of his car.

I have a collection of old CPUs starting at 8086s. I have one from nearly every generation…it’s scary. But I just keep them in a box for now…at some point, I’m thinking of making an art piece out of them. Or I can save them to show my kids…“In may day, we didn’t have optical chips…we had transistor/silicon based chips and we didn’t fly to school! We had to drive our fossil fueled ground-based vehicles to school!”
