[quote author=“Drachen”]I was just discussing it, and this is actually a step down form factor-wise for the iMac. As goofy-looking as the desklamp iMacs were they were infinitely more adjustable than this new one. The USB and FireWire jacks are also in a harder-to-reach place.
I’d love to see a “real world” picture of the new iMac with a typical setup. You can bet it will look awkward with a bunch of cables hanging off of one side. I would have though they would move it to the center so all the cables can be neatly controlled.
Imagine you have a typical amount of stuff connected…so 2 USB ports used, maybe 1 firewire, one ethernet, and one more for your speakers. That’s 5 cables (not including the power cord) coming off the side of your iMac. So much for the cleanliness of your desktop (which was one of the marketing points of previous iMac designs).
I actually liked the Lamp/Sunflower design a little better. At least the screen was adjustable. It’s just a shame these systems aren’t upgradeable. You’re essentially just buying a laptop and you can’t change very much. I still think there’s a market for “SFF”-sized Macs where users have a much greater choice on parts and can pick whatever external monitor they want. Not everyone wants the behemoth G5 tower (which really doesn’t offer much expansion for such a large case) and not everyone wants an instantly obsolete iMac G5.
