It looks like some Tivo boxes are reaching 250GB.  Is it possible to move your entire video library onto a Tivo box?  This would include DVD’s (full or compressed), home movies saved as ‘avi’ or ‘mpeg’, and TV shows.  I guess you would need a way to play the home movies and compressed DVDs, right?  Maybe hook it up to a Media Center PC?

Tivo’s primary function is centered around TV shows (cable, satellite, etc.) including pausing, recording and searching scheduled broadcasts.  It would be somewhat of a waste to use Tivo as a storage device.  You would be better off buying a large external hard drive and storing media on that.  Other Tivo users might have a different opinion (I am usually in the minority anyway).

Tivo now includes for free (less network adapters) the home media option which you can stream audio (mp3) or pictures to your TVs…also, if you have more then one tivo you can stream shows back and forth.

I’ve heard nothing of video and the media option above keeps the media on the PC.

I am still waiting for a stand alone HD Tivo.  My current setup is not optimum because I can’t use Tivo and watch HD at the same time.  I already have a good satellite receiver (Sony, of course) and don’t want a receiver/Tivo box.  There are only rumors of a stand alone HD Tivo but no units on the market yet.  Hopefully soon.

I was looking to consolodate everything video, sort of like a video jukebox.  I guess an external HD hooked up to a Media Center PC is the best way to do this for now, huh?

I’m sure it’s not the best way, but the most practical…the best way would be flash based… :D :wink:
