Sorry, thought your external redcorder might make DVD’s…
Given no other information, I’ll assume the video coming out of the recorder is standard video or S-video.
For the TR you’ll need a USB or Firewire video capture device. Some Mini-DVD camcorders will accept video input and output real-time DV through the firewire cable. Standalone outboard devices will either convert to DV or raw video that can be used by capture software on the TR. I haven’t dug to deeply in this area as my DV camera supports the former. There may be units that do real-time MPG encoding. Anything decent would be pricey.
That said, you’ll want an external drive, preferably a fast firewire unit. DV video takes a huge amount of storage, raw video even compressed with a lossless codec like huffyuv takes obscene amounts. Some programs offer real-time MPEG encoding. While this will save disk space, quality usually suffers. Given that the source is plain old TV, quality may not matter much.
Once you’ve got the video in the TR you edit, author and burn or watch it and delete it when you need the space.
Jiggy likes the Nero software that came with his new burner. http://www.siliconpopculture.com/sonytr/viewtopic.php?t=2163
There’s a range of options from quick and dirty to polished and complex. Video quality can range from poor to stunning (limited by the source).
