Oh yes definately. You get used to it after a while of seeing them again and again. Ofcourse it will be worse if your friend has a similar machine and when your comparing his with yours, the clean white shiny frame against a relatively scratchy one. Hey but if i was you i’d be thinking atleast i still have a working machine. I dont know a lot of of machines that would survive a 80 CM drop on a concrete floor.

yes you are right .. I am glad it’s still working and here is why:
First, Sony builds high quality equipments in general. Second, the case of the TR is plastic and this is much more elastic than, e.g. Titanium of my Apple PowerBook. Third, and most importantly, the way it fell down ... the comp was open at viewing angle of approx. 135 degrees and fell face down, so the comp. touched the floor as an inverted V and began to open wide until it was wide open. This action absorbed most of the impact. Last but not least, the comp was asleep, so the HD was not running, otherwise it would have been certainly damaged by it’s own head! So, yes, I was very lucky after all.
Thanks and regards

I dropped my TR1 a few months ago. It was covered by a replace or repair policy here in the UK. It was sent to an independent repair centre who said the insides were OK but the case needed replacing. Everything was OK until Sony got involved.
The parts were still available but Sony wouldn’t confirm when or if they’d delivery or how much they’d cost. I was told it often takes Sony months to provide the parts, if you’re lucky, and that nothing would speed the process. This came from a repair centre who claim to be the biggest Sony repairer in the UK.
In the end I agreed with the insurance company to accept chunk of cash and I took the TR1 back and it works fine but doesn’t look as lovely as it did.
Sony appear to be a complete disaster when it comes to after sales support. In future I’ll think hard about buying another Sony laptop.

Sony Switzerland would take approx. 87 GBP for the parts (the whole case) and 139 GBP for two hours of work!!! To give me the exact amount, they must see the comp. to see which parts are to be replaced and which not. They would not sell me the parts because my TR5 is still under warenty (otherwise the would have done that).
I shall show them the comp. when I have time. In addition, I shall see if I can get the parts, somehow, and repalce it myself, although I am not really sure if it’s that easy. May be I just accept the scratches and replace the case myself in a year. By then, more scartches are likely! Replacing the case then will be a sort of an overall face-lifting! Or may be by then a new model is due. I am pretty sure that the latter is most probable given the upgrade rate of Sony. Dothan (already in U.S.) and 60 GB are the least (by Christmas?), I guess!
Best regards

You could get the parts if someone selling a TR decides to sell the parts individually. But i dont really know how many people would do that.

I talked to the dealer who sold me the comp. and asked him to get the parts for me. He said the problem with Sony is that they consider the waranty void if any other person but their authorised repair center opens the comp. So, it’s Sony ... and I can understand their attitude in a sense!

I got my TR5 case replcaed, now it’s shining new again! One positive effect, I don’t have all those ugly stickers that disturb the elegance of this wounderful design.
Talking about design, I found that the keyboard is a little curved-up (concave) and will have it replaced on waranty; no problem! The keyboard is a little too “flexible” for my taste. May be it will be better after replacement.

I was walking down the hall in my house carrying my laptop with it turned on. I accidentally dropped it from about 4ft up and it landed flat on the ground on the bottom. No physical damage occured and the laptop was still running. I was relieved.
However, the next day I noticed the HD started throwing bad sector errors and eventually completely died. I sent the laptop to Sony and they replaced the HD in two weeks but I lost my data.
So, even if no observable damage occurs from a drop, if your laptop is on and the hard drive is spinning, the shock can cause some perm. damage.
