Just wanted to let you know about my sad, painful experience .... I put my TR5 on the garden table and wanted to get a chair to sit on and browse the internet. Suddendly, I heared how my TR5 fell on the concrete-stone floor .... face down ... wide open !!! I looked at it on the floor with my heart bleeding. I picked it up and it was working!!! Of course there were many scratches on the case from inside. But due to the white case, the -deep- scratches are barely visible. However, since I know where they are, I always look at them and ... it causes me pain! I am pleased it is still wotrking knowing that the table is 80 cm high and the floor is stone hard.
Be careful not to experience the same. The TR-series is not well balanced and tends to tip back.
Regards

sorry to hear that :( I too feel extremely scared that some day I might also drop it and that might be the end of my TR. Infact the very first day I got it, I kept it on a stool and while getting up just pushed that stool by mistake…it almost fell over. Luckily it regained it’s balance, else that could have been the end of my TR on the very first day :|

I avoided a similar scenario yesterday, i was at work and had to take a very far plug so the power cable was floating in the air and my boss came to my desk without noticing the cable ... Ouch  Fortunately i just had the time to catch the TR. I let you imagine how afraid i was after ...

Are there any means of getting a new case without paying the world?
May be I save the money and get the new model in 6 months or less, parhaps by the end of the year, which for sure will have a Dothan processor, the 735?!!, and the new Toshiba 60 GB HD ... and perhaps a new high resolution MotionEye cam?
What would you do in my place?

I already emailed sonystyle UK and also major retailers such as, Micro Anvika here in the UK. These machines are not going to be released in the UK, not anytime soon anyway.

I am kinda in your place, and here is what im doing. My TR is coming home to me this tuesday. Ill tell you why its not worth waiting.
Nothing is going to happen as soon as the next 6 months. No. Infact do not expect the dothan processor notebooks here in the UK. May be Toshiba 60 gb hd but not the processors. Sad but true. Motion eye camera, well there is no point for sony to spend all that money on an higher resolution motion eye camera now is there. I mean the resolution on the camera is not that high, but its not suppose to be. Its just a webcam. So thats that.

Sony never says what’s goinig to happen tomorrow, so I expect anything from Sony any soon!
But anyway, if not to wait for the new model, do you think it is worth repairing? any idea how much it would cost to replace the case? OK, of course I can ask sony Switzerland where I live ... but what’s your opinion?
(BTW: I have always used English Keyboard and OS on all my computers ... I am an Apple Mac user ... the TR5 is my first Windows machine ... not because of the OS but because it’s lovely looking ... Apple like, but prettier than the 12” Powerbook)

I think you can replace the case yes. I havent done it myself , but i have a friend who has a tr2 and he got a brand new case installed on his tr just a few months back. Here in the UK it cost him about 90 odd GBP. I could confirm that with him but im sure sony , where ever you stay, do it as well. I dont know if they replace the keyboard though. You could always ask them.

writetovarun: you described my feelings exactly!! Especialy the “it should not have happened ... one could/should have been more careful and securely placed it, etc.” Thanks to the white colour and strudiness of the TR, nothing serious gas happened ... only deep scratches in MY SKIN!

The keyboard and the screen are fine! I have scratches at the edges from inside and a little one on the left hinge of the display! 90 £ are approx. 205 SFR or 133 Euro, that would be OK. I guess I will ask Sony tomorrow.
Thanks

thanks a lot, writetovarun
I will ask about Sony’s conditions (price and time) and then decide. Again, if it’s expensive, I might want to wait and invest the money in the next model.
I have been looking at many alternatives before I ordered my TR (Samsung X10, Fujitsu H70, Panasonic Y and even Sony’s U-series) and found that the TR offers the most complete solution to my needs in an exclusive case! However, the case is scratched now ... it will irritate me for a while and I will get used to it ... will I? :?
