I wonder what justified the “TR3” moniker, as the only thing I can see different from the TR2 is the DVD burner on the top-end model and tri-band wireless. The CPU, HDD, RAM, and other specs remain unchanged.

Is the price the same as TR2? :wink:

Finally! The TR line was getting so stale. I mean the TR2 has been out for almost 4 months.

Yeah, this is pretty sad. Other than the DVD-RW option, the TR3 is essentially the same as the TR2. It seems like you do get a usb floppy disk drive included and maybe those headphones. Also, it seems that all of the Pentium M based models have 802.11a/b/g while the Celeron 800A models have 802.11b/g. So, they’re all non-Centrino models….boohoo.

One of the other things is that you can supposedly customize the models more compared to previous versions which came mostly preconfigured.

This is kinda lame. I was hoping for them to use the next Dothan mobile CPU (Pentium M with 2MB L2 cache) or a larger hard disk (not available yet) or add a third party graphics chipset (mobile Radeon 9200/9600) or bump up the max memory to 2GB (but 1GB chips aren’t readily available).
Even though I like that they finally added a DVD-RW drive it’s still not that interesting because it’s probably a 2x drive at the best. It would have been nicer if it was a 4x DVD-RW/DVD+RW drive (and slot loading for that matter). I guess we’ll need to wait for the TR4. Maybe the US release of the TR3 will come with Bluetooth…

Hmm, I wonder if it’d be possible to buy an internal replacement DVD burner.

In my opinion I doubt Sony will offer any ‘official’ upgrades for the TR2…come on, it’s a Sony :p

Of course I’m sure the evil geniuses on this board won’t be sitting on their hands either…

Based on my operation of the TR, I believe that you can change the drive out. The main issue is the bezel. You’ll need to modify the bezel to fit on correctly. I will be examining this issue in the future.  :D

Why not? The current CDRW/DVD is a replacable component by the look of it.

I wouldn’t worry about the release of the TR3. In the Japanese market, there’s essentially no difference to the TR2 except for the fact that you can now get it with a DVD-RW drive (although no specs are listed…probably 2x but could be 1x). You didn’t buy obsolescense. The non-DVD-RW TR3 models have the exact same specs as the TR2 models. The only other difference is that it comes with a few extra amenities.

They may not even release the TR3 in the US since the specs haven’t really changed at all. I was hoping the TR3 would be released sometime in February or March to coincide with the 2nd generation Pentium Ms but it looks like those are delayed anyways. Perhaps a summer release of a TR4 will have all of the new stuff we’re all waiting for.

Any sources for the TR3 yet??  My TR2 is still backordered from CDW till the 17th or so.

Back to the same issues though, if you in stall your English OS it will most likely void the warranty… :?

UK models will always lag well behind the rest. After all aren’t we daft enough to pay huge prices for minimal spec machines. :oops:

I’m not. I’ve followed twynne’s lead and picked up a tr2ap3 from pcconnection. They were out of stock on new ones so I’ve taken a chance on a refurbished one. I was told that often nothing has been done to them, they are just returns.

Anyway, a 30 day return policy and a 90 day Sony warranty should convince me if there is anything dodgy about it.

It shipped on Monday evening (UK time) and I got it this morning.  :D

$1832 (£998). Not bad as the cheapest TR1MP is more than £1650. OK there is around £180 to pay in tax but the delivery was only something like £26.

Know what you mean but I really couldn’t wait for UK market to catch up. I can manage with a USB Bluetooth add-on and for DVD-RW I’ll use wireless connection to desktop. Don’t see that I will have to do many DVD backups on the move anyhow! For work CD-RW is essential and for play DVD-ROM is adequate. RAM, HD and g flavo(u)r wifi was enough to convince me. Not so worried about the extra 100MHz.

For Japan, it is a worthed upgrade from TR2 as the memory comes with 512MB standard.  It has been 512MB in US model, therefore, the TR3 does not have any significant changes.

If you want to order TR3, you should consider go all the way order the TR3/SP model which comes with the built-in DVDRW.  We can special order for you and do complete configuration for $3099 at ICUBE.

Yeah the order will be made through Sony Japan and we do all the configuration for you.  Usually it takes about a week for Sony to process their order in Japan.  But all depends on the load of their pre-order.  The first week is usually the worse.
