[quote author=“TruthSeeker”][quote author=“Drachen”] The SP2 that was released when this thread was started is the
exact same binary code that will be released on Windows Update (the issue this article is concerned about) .
Didn’t know that. I’m not skittish anymore. I thought Microsoft was going to tweak the update. Dumb me.
Notl dumb, TS. They’re only surface problems, but screaming headlines are a necessity.
A quick look at the affected programs indicates the “problem” is in the XP firewall and affects FTP and server applications. It doesn’t “break” programs, it simply blocks ports they need. If you’ve been using a firewall such as ZoneAlarm you’re aware of the program access pop-ups. People who install personal firewalls are usually somewhat cognizent of their purpose. I suspect Redmond doesn’t want to place those choices in the hands of Ma & Pa User. “Hey, Ma, says here freelunch.exe wants to access the internet. Sounds good to me, whaddya think?”
Down the road I think we’ll see something like the Microsoft certified drivers for program installation. When you install an app. it will inform the O/S of the ports it needs along with, possibly, an authorization code for access. (To preclude a same-named virus from getting out)
Go ahead, install SP2, odds are you won’t have a problem… and if you do, you’ve got US
