Don’t know. Only normally use BT for syncing with my P900 but great to be able to hop onto my broadband connection at work as our network is still just wired with no Wireless.

Other big improvement for me is WiFi. I continually had dropped connections even though signal strength was always excellent. Installing SP2 on my TR & desktop has totally eliminated the drops & consistantly manintains 54Mbps

No Longhorn won’t have built in virus protection.  But Microsoft is releasing their own Anti-Virus software which will NOT be included with their Windows operating system (I’m betting becasue of anti-competative lawsuit worries).

As for Norton not working I have hear people say the Security Center works find while others say it can’t detect Nortons.  I read a while back that there is an update that needs to be downloaded (Live Update should have it) to make it work with the Security Center.

But I can tell you that Trend Micro Internet Security 2004 works flawlessly with the Security Center.  I also head (but can’t confirm) that AVG Free Anti-Virus works and so does McAfree.

Hi everybody,
I have the new TR5, my question is should I install SP2 or not yet? Sony says wait until it’s on vaio-link site!
Did anyone experience problems with this upgrade?

I have a TR2MP so only difference is 0.1Ghz & DVD-RW. I have had no problems at all & would recommend the upgrade. For me it gave me more BT options as I mentioned earlier & drastically improved my WiFi issues.

If your running the included Norton Internet Security 2004 remeber to run LiveUpdate to ensure it works properly with the new XP Guard warning system.

Actually, it’s not delayed at all.

All MS is doing is creating a tool for organizations that were too lazy to actually test out SP2 for the last half a year (or longer) in their environments. Of course, the corporate environment always takes much longer to deploy stuff since there’s a lot of testing involved. So, no major corporation would roll it out quickly anyways.

The general roll out for the public is not changed.

In terms of broken applications, it’s not Microsoft’s fault either. ISVs have had plenty of time to work out any kinks in their software. Also, the new security enhancements and architecture are a good thing for us and it just means that ISVs have been lazily coding their software and should have been following all of the Windows programming rules in the first place.

When you read the IT press you have to remember that operating a standalone computer or even a small-business network is worlds different than managing a large corporate network. MS is releasing that no SP2 auto-update patch for shops that haven’t tested their custom apps extensively with SP2. If you upgrade 10,000 workstations with SP2, and it breaks your custom-written purchase order system, letting SP2 onto your SUS server could potentially cost your company millions of dollars (and you a job). For most users, there’s little to no reason not to do it at this point. There have been just a handful of incompatabilites with programs like nmap, Norton AV (not reporting to Security Center properly) and Divx (installing an incompatible shell extention), but nothing major.

You’re confusing sysadmins who want to block the update before they do comprehensive testing (and wait for program updates) with the general public. They’re just letting companies some time to get ready if they choose. For people like yourself that use off-the-shelf software from large vendors, I don’t think you’ll have a problem.

Normally, I’d agree, but there’s been a lot of complaints on NTbugtraq about breaking changes between RC2 and RTM. I know Symantec was complaining about it.

Ah, that’s possible. I guess I read somewhere that for the most part if a program used standard Windows programming conventions and wasn’t cheating by bypassing stuff then it would likely not break.

But yeah, this isn’t anything new…this happens all the time when a SP is released.

FWIW, McAfee Enterprise 7.1 is just peachy on my TR and on my home desktop with SP2.

YES!  I can’t state that strongly enough you should install Service Pack 2.  The firewall is just one part of the package, SP2 also fixes all currently public Internet Explorer holes (even if you use Firefox you still have IE installed and need it to update your system).  It also adds in a bunch of other new security features (including better wireless and bluetooth security and support).

There are so many new features and security enhancments that anybody who runs a system with Windows XP needs to install this.

What is RC2 and RTM?
