[quote author=“psikey”]Hip-Hop?
Ok, the actual music that was playing was James Brown’s Rapp Payback which I would classify as FUNK/SOUL.
The style of dance is Locking, one of the 3 original hip-hop foundations and arguably the oldest of the 3. The original three are Locking, Breaking (or B-Boying) and Popping. Breaking was started on the east coast in New York. The other two were West Coast based. Popping (or Boogaloo) was started in Fresno, California and Locking was created in Los Angeles, CA.
Locking is credited for putting “street dance” in the mainstream eyes. At the height of their popularity, the Lockers were on prime time television with their own children’s TV show, a prime time special, and guest appearances of the Dick Van Dyke Show, The Carol Burnett Show, Saturday Night Live, and Schlitz Malt Liqour commercials. Many of you may remember Re-Run (aka Fred Berry aka Penguin) from What’s Happening…he was one of the original Lockers.
