I’m thinking of getting one of those 20” LCDs capable of running at 1600x1200. Can the TR drive a display of that resolution (through its VGA port)?

Yes, the TR1/2 can drive an external display at up to 1600x1200 @ true color, so you should be good to go.

You’ll get 1600x1200 from just about any 20” LCD produced in the past year and a half or so.

keep in mind you may get some slowdown due to a) use of external monitor and b) use of resolution so big.
