Hey everyone. I’m in the market for a digital camera. I’m just curious what everyone else uses. What camera setup do you have? I’m looking to buy something about $280 or lower. I’m a student so money gets tight sometimes. Any good names out there? Right now I’m eyeing a Fuji FinePix. So, if anyone can make some recommendations, etc, I would really appreciate it.
had the canon a70 unitl i replaced it with the dsc-t1. its a very good camera for its price. sony cameras are great but its a bit pricey otherwise i would highly recommend the t1. how many mega pixel are we talking about here? the A70 is 3.2
Yeah, dude. Get the T1. It’s well worth it in the long run, cuz you’ll tend to use it more—You’ll tend to carry it more since it’s the size and weight of a pack of playing cards.
no dude, dont listen to them! there is only one kinda digital camera worth getting in that price range, and i know, my girl has one. and i take a lot of photos with a canon 300d now.
get any of the Canon Powershot Digital Elph Cameras in ur price range and try to get one above 4.0 Megapixel. My girl got a Canon Powershot S410 and its a great all-around camera ya can put in ur pocket. it rivals my d300 sometimes but it’s a lot harder for an old dog like me to use - UGH, digital viewfinders!...gf however handles it like a pro, and she’s a newbie.
I really like the size and published features of the Sony DSC-T1.
Reviews and comments on the T1 are not particularly glowing. Things like washed out color, useless flash and only fair image quality.
The newish Casio EX-Z40 holds some appeal, but I’ve not seen any reviews on it.
Naturally all I want is an Olympus E1 in a credit card format.
Joking aside, for serious shots I’ll pack around a bigger body with enough lens and features to do anything I want. What I’m looking for here is the best quality in the smallest package I can get. Kinda like my TR.
i have canon Powershot S45. I have no problem with this camera, but two big -‘s are it’s CF and it’s big. +‘s are CF price < MS price, good quality picture
i want to buy T11 cause of it’s MS (so i don’t need to use cable to transfer my pictures, unlike canon) and it’s small, but i heard that T11/T1 quality < S45 even though S45 is an older camera.
just like phone, camera is useless with all these features if it can’t capture good quality pictures (same as phone, it’s useless if it can’t receive signal). i want small camera, but i don’t want to have two digital cameras…................ :?
The Sony P100 is actually a decent little camera as well with a stronger flash than the DSC-T1 and the ability to have attachments added. It’s small enough to fit in your pocket and takes pretty good pictures as well.
oh gosh… just ‘cause it says sony. i have a t1 but i don’t always recommend it. besides it’s almost twice the price range he’s looking to spend. and don’t forget about memory costs.
now that we know your price range, what kinda application are you looking for? upclose shots at parties? landscaping? everyday use? etc etc… add some more info and we should be able help ya out Do you need a zoom? do you plan to use it mostly for outdoors or indoors?

Thanks, also, jso902 and gameson for your comments. I hope it’s OK, I just kinda hijacked this thread since there was already an ongoing discussion of the T1 and cameras in general.
In my case price isn’t a big issue. If I’m going to do serious photography I’ll lug something appropriate. What I’m looking for here is small, light with the best possible resolution and speed (both lens and write-time). Good flash would be nice, but is secondary. Theoretically, a faster lens offers a bit of improvement in low-light situations. Mostly I just want the ability to take good quality shots with something that fits in a pocket or my TR gadget bag.
Since I first posted I’ve been digging deeper and I think I need to factor in total travel weight and bulk. Both the T1 and Z40 have good sized docking stations. Moving media to the TR is also an issue, but I’ve seen some pretty flexible PCMCIA flash adapters that would do the job.
A slightly larger camera with direct USB and charging attachments might be a better solution. But, good lord, those tiny cameras are sooooo cool.
lol… i didn’t mean to downplay the camera hehe. I have a T1 and i love it. I bought it because i wanted maximum portability and i kinda dig the big screen. As for the money issue, i was directing that to the orignal poster.
if you want pros and cons about the camera, here they are:
pros:
big screen
awesome portability - i’m a traveler and i have limited space
great day pictures
good close up pictures at night - i like how i can whip this thing out with one hand and take a picture with a buddy
great for parties
I have a Sony laptop = Memory stick nice pair eh?
USB 2.0 cradle
marine pack is offered
the movies? good lord are they sharp!
3x zooM
cons:
yes you’ll get blurry pictures - what can you expect from such a small lens? how do i get around this? simple… take a shit load of pictures.
yes the flash isn’t super super bright - why? look how small it is! size does matter.
you’ll get low lighting - photoshop can fix this in 2 seconds.
no tripod hole, you have to purchase the special casing
memory stick is expensive and that 1gb stick you have is useless for this. you have to buy a DUO which is quite a pretty penny

Thanks, I’ll check it out.
I hadn’t seen this one, run the java applet to appreciate the unit:
I like the looks of the Casio Z40. It’s got a faster lens than the T1 and reviewers loved the earlier models write speed. Still a docking station to pack around…
Thought i might just chuck in my 2 pence worth. I shoot all the time with a Canon 1d and struggle to feel happy with results from anything else but i recently borrowed a Casio Z4 and was very impressed. It was quick to focus and the large lcd screen on the back was great. I ignore the docking station except for charging and have a cheap usb card reader that does the job for me. I have notice some barrel distortion etc with the casio but that’s common on all these cameras with small lenses, but I guys I’m spoilt with canon L glass.
Why does everyone get blurry pics from the T1, just hold your hand straight and use auto focus, I haven’t taken one bad pic yet, I even get actions shots clear as day (heli, race-car, etc).
