The flash drives that I have are IDE. They were originally hooked up to the MB, then I tried a Promise EIDE/133 card. Either way, it wasn’t close to instant boot.

Guest - Flash is not more stable then HD/CD/DVD in any way. People are crying all over the net how their memory cards or their flash drives lost data for one reason or another. Flash is great unless something minor happens. With a CD or DVD its possible to recover data, with a HD its pretty easy to recover data, flash, once its gone, it’s pretty much gone.

That is not true at all.  I just had my Thumbdrive crap out on me.  So I sent it back to Lexar and they gave me a new one with all of my data restored.  The other mediums are easier to restore data because they are more mainstream.  Just like there are more hackers for Windows than Linux.  Windows is more mainstream.  It is easier to find parts for a Honda than a Bentley.  I could go on and on.

Depends on why your thumbdrive died. If it had a bad USB connection or something is one thing, flashing the memory is pretty much complete, and thats what usually happens.

No, because thats not how hard drives work. Its commonly known that there is extra space on the drive that the user cannot get to that holds data. This is not the same with flash.

man… if your hd fails that often, that’s pretty sad…  i’ve only had two failures in 10 years.  and both were from my tr.  but i blame the failure with new 1.8” technology. 

as for backing up on cd/dvd, why’re they getting scratched?  i wouldn’t imagine a lot of access to them

if you want sure fire protection, go get a desktop and raid it or ghost your computer with a backup hd every week

btw, i like how you guys are comparing 98SE with XP.  lol my 233mhx (win98) desktop boots in 40 secs my state of the art 1gz pentium M (xp)cold boots in about a min and a half.  why? it’s the pretty graphics.  i like pretty things

As technology gets faster (100mhz-3ghz) developers are stressing the technology to the max…software is usually ahead of the hardware…the faster the systems get doesnt mean the computer will boot up quicker. Load DOS on a 3Ghz machine, it will boot fast…
