Last weekend while using my TR as normal it froze up, and then when restarted refused to finish loading XP. After numerous attempts at recovery, I eventually gave in and completely rebuilt it using the Sony recovery DVD’s. Whilst trying to recover it, I used a disk utility at one point called EasyRecovery (ontrack.com) and it reported a number of sector read errors on the drive. Nonetheless the restore worked and I eventually got back up and running.
To be safe, I decided to run a chkdsk on C: to make sure the drive was sound before going further. XP restarts and the chkdsk starts running, but it freezes during one of the checks and never gets any further. Restarting the PC continues to try to run chkdsk as it’s obviously not completed the previous attempt. The only way to get around this was to reinstall it AGAIN!
I’m now back at my desktop, and have contacted Sony and arranged for it to go back for repair under warranty. This is a major hassle as I live in the UK and bought it in the US… you know the drill.
Question is - is there a utility anyone has used to check the drive to confirm that there’s a problem. I’d really like to be sure before I go to the trouble to ship back to the US etc.
Thanks in advance all,
Tom
