I’m travelling to the US tomorrow, planning to pick up an Apple BT keyboard.  Can anyone recommend a reliable BT USB dongle as my PCG-TR2 bought in Singapore didn’t come with internal BT?  I’ll be close to a Best Buy or Circuit City…...Also being a TUMI freak I’m planning on picking up the small notebook bag in Fusion Z. $195 vs GBP195 its a no brainer! I’m not sure what BestBuy or Circuit City carry but, technically, any BT USB (or PCMCIA) device will work with Bluetooth HID (Human Input/Interface Device) devices (like mice and keyboards). So, you can pick up anyone that you find. Almost everyone I’ve seen supports the HID profile so you should be fine. It’s easier to pair them with your system using Microsoft’s built-in “Wireless Link” control panel applet.

Also, just so you know, some of the Apple BT Keyboard’s buttons will not work when you’re using it with your PC. It’s mostly the last three function keys (Pause, Print Screen, Scroll Lock) and the special multimedia keys but everything else that’s essential works.

In control panel do you have a Wireless Link Icon. If so, click and add and the wizzard will help you. You should read the documentation with the device you wish to connect first.

If you don’t have a Wireless Icon, you should install the belkin software since it will have any special drivers you need. If it’s anything like the Sony software, you won’t have to use it once the driver is installed.

I guess my big question is what’s to like or dislike? Once the devices are associated with your TR you don’t need to run the program.

As best I can figure it out. While XP understands bluetooth it needs a manufacturer-specific driver to “hook” the bluetooth hardware to itself.

A large number of Mfg. use Widcom software. They control distribution by requiring each Mfg. bluetooth module to have an ID that the software looks for. There’s a long convoluted thread elsewere in the forums discussing this. There is also reference to a site that offers to help you spoof the driver for use with, say, the Sony module or devices whose manufacturer doesn’t provide the latest version.

I still come back to my question. What is it about the Belkin software you don’t like?

You should be able to install the driver on as many machines as you like. When the dongle is plugged into each machine, XP recognizes it and goes to work.

Once bluetooth devices have been associated with a PC, it should remember them when the dongle is plugged in.  The only time you have to use the manufacturers front-end program or the wireless app in control panel is when you want to add, modify or remove devices.

While setup might be a bit confusing, operation is transparent.
