I have PCG-TR1 and like most of guys i tried to upgrade it to XP Pro. What I did was that I just formatted the C drive and installed the XP Pro without considering anything about this Recovery Stuff.
Current Scene is that I have installed basic drivers from Sony site and system is atleast up but without many functionalities.
No button i.e. Capture, Volume and Zoom on LCD and Fn Combo (Except Home, end etc) are working anymore. I really want to use that Zoom button and volume buttons as well.
I have got no Recovery disc but 2 GB hdd space is missing. I cant find that hidden Recovery Partition either :( . I am stuck guys….
The TR1 didn’t have a recovery partition (from what I remember). It came with CDs (or at least mine did). The 2GB you think you’re missing isn’t missing. It’s just lost once your format a drive. A 30GB drive is not really a full 30GB. You lose some of it when you format it.
You may need to call Sony to order the discs if you don’t have them. I believe they cost around $20-25. Otherwise, you may want to search the forums for tips on how to recover the OS properly. There’s tons of threads here.
Also, refer to this thread for the tutorial on installing all the softwares (It’s for TR3AP3, but it should work fine even for TR1, if not blame it on japaneseimportscomau  ):
