Wow….. that sucks. But I saw that coming.

Nobody should be surprised by this. The current Prescott Pentiums are hot, pipeline inefficient, power-hungry beasts. They’ve even come up with a new motherboard and case standard (BTX) to accomodate the new chips’ heat output. Intel’s problem right now is that it’s not Apple. (Bear with me, you read that right!) With its G5 2.5 Ghz machines, Apple could put a retail-quality water cooling system to help alleviate excessive heat eailsy, since it has full control of the entire computer. Intel has limited control over the large vendors and none over the smaller ones. Margins are low enough without adding a water-cooling system on top of everything else. AMD’s not far behind, but Intel has really painted themselves into a corner.

Do you think AMD has a good opportunity to ‘seize the moment’?  Will they?  They took a risk moving to 64 bit, but that looks to be paying off.

Are the new AMD 64 processors supposed to do well with heat?  I went to Best Buy yesterday and
found that the new HP desktop replacement LAPTOP (zd series) has a 64-bit AMD inside it…. isn’t that a bit, different? :?

That was me back then.  The TR is my very first Intel CPU.  All of the desktop systems I have built have been AMD.  I even stayed loyal during the Thunderbird days when Tom’s Hardware produced that aweful video of the CPU catching on fire in seconds after the fan was taken off.  Rahul loves that video.

lo, I sure did, but now even I’m going in for an AMD processor after Drachen’s recommendation. I will be buying the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ processor whose prices have crashed over the past few days…it began at around 500 and now it’s come down to 350…it all works out very well for me and it also performs better than Intel’s Extreme ed. processors in games

I’m sure the processor burning up when the heat sink was removed is something AMD took care of long time ago.
