The drive costs $275 USD. Technically, yes, it voids the warranty. It’s the price we pay for having the cutting edge.
It’s fairly easy to do but that depends on your comfort level and familiarity with the internals of electronics. You shouldn’t be too afraid if you’re careful and are use to opening up computers.
You’re not necessarily breaking any seal but the DVD-RW drive is not a user installable/upgradeable part…at least, it’s not meant to be. Only the memory is a user installable.
If you break something or damage your system because you opened it up it’s technically not their fault. You shouldn’t have needed to open the system up….at least, that’s what Sony’s Support and Service will argue.

Do you know the model number of the drive by any chance? I am going to have a look around Japan for one to pop in my TR1.

i may be interested as i am in the market for an external DVD writer…have not decided which way to go, replace the cdr in the TR or have yet another box hanging of the TR….

U may buy a USB2.0 external box for ur UJ-755
then make ur TR a DVD+-R Multi Burner

The Sony site has it for $435. Where can you get it for $275?
They stopped selling it for $275, at least, thats what we think.

I think I’ll let Sony keep their drive and just make a $400 mental down-payment on my new TR7
