here is my question (thanks in advance for the advice):

in my house the computer area is upstairs and that is where the tr is some of the time and the ac adapter all of the time when i move around the place i like have the ac adapter with me (but it is a pain to get at to unplug etc).  this is where i am confused, should i just get an extra ac adapter or should i go for the extended battery (which is a small fortune)

Why not just get a spare ‘figure-8’ cable so you can have one in each location.  They’re cheap and easy to come by, then you can just take the adapter and plug into the figure 8 wherever you are.  I’ve got this setup in the bedroom/lounge and it saves me having to dig around behind the bed or sofa each time I move rooms!

thats a great idea.  can i get one at radio shack?  and are there voltage things i need to know so i wont mess up the computer?

No, there’s no voltage regulation in the figure-8… that’s all done in the adapter.  Just take your current one along to make sure you get the right plug (I think there are only a couple of types available - at least there are in the UK).
