I wanted to make full recovery of my TR5 (after playing with it for a while!). According to the printed material “Guide to Troubleshooting and Recovering your Vaio System” delivered with the comp., one should be able to run the Recovery Utility from the HD. This is not possible -or so far I was never successful- on TR5. The Recovery Utility is not on the start menu, so I searched for it on the HD and tried to run it. It asks for the Recovery Discs. This is what I did; inserted the Disc 1/2 and restarted. Then I was able to recover successfully.
Now the question, what are the approx. 10 GB on Drvie C for? These cannot be just for the OS and pre-installed apps. I guess a large part is reserved for System Restore (not to be confused with Recovery)
Any other ideas?

With the OS & all apps installed it could be near 10GB bearing in mind that the Restore disks are on 2 DVD’s which will have data compressed with over 4GB storage per disk!!! WinXP Pro OS, All the VAIO media stuff, MW Works, NIS2004, Adobe Suit etc…....

I have a TR2MP and used PartitionMagic to reduce the two partitions to one big one and there was no hidden partition on the drive.

Because we get the full restore disks (unlike our US members) I’m sure they don’t put an image on the drive

I come from (still with) the Mac world. On my Titanium Powerbook, I also have one partition. On my TR, I started appreciating the two partitions (C for Apps/OS and D for personal Data). I have completely recoverd my TR5 three times until now because Windows Apps caused me -minor- problems and I like the comp to be “clean”. Mac OSX is rock stable compared to XP and most importantly, the OS is more transparent in the sense that you can manually clean the disk if required without harming the comp. Mac OS 9 was even clearer but not as robust as Mac OS X (Unix-based).
