Don’t get me wrong. It’s not like I’m abandoning the TR platform completely. It’s just that my computing needs have changed since last year. Originally, I needed simple mobile computing and the TR more than handled that with aplomb.
However, after using my TR for work (I’m a web/appdev consultant and a graphics/media designer) for nearly a year, I did notice a few things lacking that are addressed with the Type S. I basically need more power, and capacity but still want to keep relatively mobile and for me, nothing seems to come close to what the Type S offers. Also, having the Type S will allow me to get rid of one of my desktop systems in my “labs” since it’s powerful enough to handle many more things.
Of course, I’m going to keep the TR for traveling (although the girlfriend will get to use it primarily) and will continue to look at future TR designs. I did base my decision to buy a Type S on Intel’s plans for the next Centrino platform. Knowing that the GMA integrated graphics was still not really a DirectX 9 part had a large part in my decision. I’m doing lots more 3D work and having a real part helps tremendously. Also, many of the other advances of the new Centrino platform don’t seem to be coming soon enough so I decided to get something I can use now instead of waiting.
That is exactly what happened with me… the first month, month in a half with the TR was great… still a slight drag in power compared to my 1.7 GHz Banias previously, but not to bad…then I noticed more and more drag in performance as I began to run more CPU and video intensive applications… Totally pissed me off but ...that’s life isn’t it
I love my TR and now I’m having trouble deciding whether I should upgrade to the S series AND build a newer, better desktop. OR, keep the TR and still build my desktop…either way I want a very powerful desktop with dual 17” monitors… I don’t know if my desktops power will be enough to balance out the TR’s use which I will still be using to take to school everyday with Bluetooth for internet.
