[quote author=“Drachen”][quote author=“TruthSeeker”]I guess large inexpensive flash isn’t in demand, huh? Sorry, tifosiv122, you know I had to say that.
I guess it’s true what they say about reading comprehension being a lost art.
I hope you know me better than that. It was just a shallow cheap shot.
tifosiv122, I will take your word for it on the performance aspect, but I will maintain that performance will only get better with time. As for flash never being cheap enough for mainstream use, I completely disagree here. As I mentioned before, there will come a time where capacity takes a back seat to some of the features that flash brings. Longhorn may not be here until 2007. We will see affordable 20GB flash before this. I guarantee it.
But i think Erik’s point of view (and mine) is that in this increasingly crazy world in which storage requirements are going up something like 20GB of flash storage isn’t going to be much. Especially when you have faster TERABYTE-sized hard disks by then.
Currently, 12GB of 80x Compact Flash is a whopping $15,000. I don’t see the price of that coming down to $99 in the 5-6 years. At that time our typical storage requirements will far exceed the usefulness of 12GB.
You shouldn’t also discount other newer technologies like 3D memory technologies (which store thousands of TERABYTEs in the size of a sugar cube) which might be more effective than flash in the future.
Flash will exist in one form or another but until we see manufacturers making more breakthroughs in terms of performance, longevity, and production then we’ll remain “realists”.

This seems like a really interesting technology. After reading some of Matrix’s technology overviews. Seems like a company that would be worth investing some stock into… ...
Yet it seems wierd as to how exactly simply stacking the layers vertically can add that much more efficiency… O well…I’m no semiconductor engineer.

I can deal with that. We’ll be ‘optimists’ and you can be ‘realists’. That’s fair, case closed.
Another reason I like this forum is that debates usually end on a civil note. There is very little in the ways of flaming here…..except Drachen’s ultra-sarcasm…....kidding. :D
