[quote author=“TruthSeeker”]Yeah since flash is gonna take over the world I figured I would stay brushed up on it. :D
Why wait? Here is a 800 MB Hard Drive (flash) for only $54 + Shipping.
You can just about install an OS, and run Notepad really quickly.
All kidding aside, I own 2 of drives like these, 1 GB each. I load an OS on one and Apps + Swap on the other. Trust me, it’s not as fast as you would think it is. It is cool (temperature), however.
Don’t forget the other advantages like solid state, keeps the system cooler (which you mentioned), and less likely to have mechanical failure. Seriously, when flash drives get to about 20GB at under $200, I’ll start picking them up. I know it may take some time, but:
World domination is underway…..
...where’s my homeboy/dawg/peep OnMyWayUp to back me up?
(Did I say all that right? I’m not too good at ghetto lingo)

When flash hits 20GB, you’ll be able to buy 1TB for the same price…windows will require at leat 100GB and Apple will be the best selling PC of the decade.
Sorry, forgot my cookies were gone. That was me.
And what makes you think 20 gig RAM drives are that far off :? ... They’ve got 1GB… how many years did it take for 1GB mechanical HD’s to jump up to, what the highest now?, 500 GB! like 10 years… FLASH IS ON ITS WAY! :D 8)
O and Truthseeker, me and my friends would actually only say homeboy/dawg if we were stuck in Compton or South Central and needed to…blend in… Word of the time for me and my friends?...peepz works good.
Thats fine!......you’ll all be sorry! Just wait and see! When the Great Pumpkin comes….....er….sorry, wrong speach…......Flash will surprise you all. :D

Thats my point, flash started first and its way behind.
Don’t forget original PCs had no HD, only flash RAM to store (temp) data on. We use RAM today in the same way, but the HD prices kept RAM Drives from taking off.
IBM PC 1981 16K-64K No HD
IBM PC 1983 16K-64K 10MB HD
Now…we have PCs that have at most (those non-task specific PCs) running 2 GB RAM and 250-1,000 GB HD.
Look how long it took for RAM to jump vs. HD…There will always be the flash option, but most people will opt for 100x the space on a typical HD over Flash since there isn’t that many advantages to flash.
Not really… the fact is tht most people have not been introduced to the possiblity of using RAM for loading their O/S and most used programs. Then using a HD for everything else. If they were to use high quality drives they would definitely notice a jump in their OVERALL performance with their PC and it would catch on. However, because PC manufacterers are greedy a$$holes, they aren’t willing to introduce this concept. So the general public continues to live in ignorance, (them being everyone but I us nerds  ) having never really thought hard about how to improve their performance, will never really consider the Flash option. All because the PC manufacterers like Sony, HP, etc want to save money rather than make people happy and help our world societies move to a more advanced ground with technology so when evil aliens :xeno: come to destroy the world we will have a better chance of destroying them.
JUST KIDDING
But even so, if people were able to have this technology in their computers and experience it for themselves, it would catch on very quickly, IMO.

How much would you suppose that would be? My Windows directory alone on my work PC (which I consider to be pretty rinky-dink) is just under 2.5 GB. Add another GB or so for my “most used programs”. If you want instant-on, add another GB or more for the entire working set of the OS in memory. If you want to have the swap file in flash, add 1.5 - 3GB.
How much memory do you think Longhorn’s decendants will take up by the time 6-8GB flash costs as much as 2GB SDRAM?
Drachen is correct. I could barely load my OS and swap on my 2, 1GB drives. Sure, it loaded quicker, but it was far from instant on and far from what you would think it would load up.
