I bought a plan for $349 and after seeing a post about the accident plans.  I called up bestbuy and they said it doesn’t cover the screen.  Is the Sony standard 1 year policy good enough?

They said they would prorate my money back and maybe I could find one that does.

Best price on the 3 year plan is around 275, There’s a number to call and if they don’t cover the screen… let us know.

My CompUSA warranty was 2 years (after the Sony one) and covers the screen.

I have the Circuit City extended plan, and I’ll have to see if mine covers the screen or not.  If it didn’t I’m going to go ballistic!

It sounds like circuit city has an “internal” plan.

There are two outfits providing sevice under agreement or contract with Sony. One provides only extended warantee, the other offers the additional accidental coverage. I was given to understand that latter holds the most current contract. If you search the threads here you can find the official sony pdf that generally covers the offerings and find the same text on a number of sites offering sony extended warantees. Prices range from around $330 to $264 for the 3 year accidental.

I never ran into the actual policy legalese on line.

here’s a true story: last summer I bought an accident replacement 3 year international plan AFTER breaking my laptop monitor on a TR1.  To COMPUSA’s credit, they were very understanding - as I broke the monitor only 48 hours after purchasing it.  my senile father-in-law, then 95, sat on the TR with the lid halfway down and the earbuds on the keyboard.  I had refused the plan on purchase, thinking them a waste of money. I brought the laptop back and was like “wha the fuuuu”.  I know, it was very dishonest of me pretending that I didn’t know what happened.  It was just a hairline crack but enough to make the screen dead. I felt horrible. I thought that if i just acted ignorant, they would honor the 30-day no questions asked return policy.  But at compusa, that does not apply to Sony screens, as the mgr told me that they have to eat that cost. So here’s what he did, as the purchase date was less than 48 hours ago - he sold me the 3-year replacement accident plan for 275$ and took in the TR1 under that. I was so pleased I vowed to always consider shopping there in the future.  It was a lucky break, and sold me on aftermarket protection plans for laptops. I’ve had them before but never used them - thought them a waste. Now i will be exchanging that same replaced TR1 this summer for a new one under the plan, as the harddrive is kaput.  So that will be 2 machines under this plan. Now that I have confessed I feel much better.  I have paid pennance throughout the year, visiting many monastaries and placing many offerings in order to try and cleanse my karma in this regard. so I will also say this for COMPUSA and their protection plan - buy it, it’s worth it.  the compusa where they were so nice is located in Garden Grove Cali, right off the 405.

thanks for that CCity guy. An additional warrenty that DOES NOT cover accidents is certainally a complete waste of money. Many CCs offer free extended warrenties if u pay using them.  That seems a little more sane.  BTW, the young spakey teen at Compusa told me that even if i went outside and ran the laptop over with my truck, it would be covered. Sure would like to test that assertion!

It’s exactly the same plan being sold by a number of chain retailers and online stores. Same thing in a retail outlet is $50 or more higher. I’ll have more info on the policy as it’ll be here tomorrow.

I generally agree that extended warantees are a joke. I’m getting this one because of the accidental coverage - this little box is going to be going a lot of places a computer prob. shouldn’t be.

Only other ext. warantee I’ve ever had was on a $2K Sony TV, they threw in a 7year warantee for $100 or some such. Damn thing is 10 years old and still going strong…

And, yes, CC sukkkks.  The only time I’ll buy from them is when they’re giving something away.
