Dead right. It’s much easier to find, ahem, freeware shall we say for the PC. Hardly any, ahem, freeware for Mac’s out there on the web. You end up having to buy software “gasp”

Almost nothing is faster on a MAC, and if you think so, come up with benchmarks, they always lean towards the PC, even products such as Adobe now run faster on a PC.

Now also, don’t get me wrong, I like PC’s. I like Mac’s. Some of the best design stuff has come from Apple. Some cool machines/software/other stuff, have come from PC’s.
Mac’s do have the advantage of not having wndows on them either

But seriously again; there are differences, and some advantages/disadvantages, but the figures don’t lie and when it comes to video editing, photoshop or graphics stuff and any sound stuff - the Mac wins and rules.

I have a secret; government auctions. I live in a public service town and they have a policy of getting rid of their computers after 3 years. They sell them through auctions and i go to these frequently. Strange/cool thing is; people who go to these auctions are so PC centered that they don’t pay anything for Mac stuff so I make out like a bandit. For example, last auction i picked up a G4 desktop fully spec’d out for $400. Previous to that i bought a pallet :shock:  of assorted IT gear on which was a couple of dead PC laptops and a G3 desktop and a 21inch Apple monitor. All came out of the local police training college. I sold the G3 on ebay and the monitior worked beautifully and is no a 2nd monitor on my final cut pro suite. Cost to me: $10. Honest.
My dual PIII server with 90 something GB of SCSI 3 storage cost me $400.
That’s my secret. The most expensive computer i own is the TR :D

Not to nitpick…and I’m not saying one is better than the other but you simply cannot use benchmarks from Apple as a means of justifying anything. In fact, you can’t use any benchmarks directly from any manufacturer as they’re always skewed to make their own product look the best. Apple has good hardware but they are perhaps the worse at skewing data to make their products look better. They’ll claim their product is TWICE as fast as any comparable PC system.*

* when using a G5 optimized plugin in this single Photoshop test.

Barefeats (a very pro-Mac) site has more realistic tests over a better range of comparable software and you’ll see that the Mac isn’t much faster than a PC. Of course, you’ll notice the absense of Athlon 64/Opteron chips which are the true performance champs in the PC world. Heck, even Intel’s own Pentium M is a better processor than the Pentium 4.

Over at DigitalVideoEditing.com, you can read a slightly older article about how PCs are faster if not equivalent to Macs in video editing. They show a single Pentium 4 outpacing a dual processor G4.

So, you can argue for both sides. In the end, I think it’s really about the same. Putting out blanket statements that X is faster than Y is ridiculous since it really can’t be proven anyways.

Processesor cycle for cycle, yes. It cleans the P4’s clock. It’s also much more power efficient.

IIRC someone had mentioned (or I read somewhere) that a 1 ghz pentium m processor performs like a 1.8 ghz P4 processor besides the power efficiency.

Their marketing dept doesn’t just lie about benchmarks, they’ve been known to misrepresent their products capabilities too. Just for fun, call a sales rep and ask if their XServe RAID is a SAN. Then call their tech support and ask the same question.

oooh, but the G4 powerbooks now have BACKLIT keyboards! that alone makes me drool.

Imagine that a Pentium M 755 (2Ghz Dothan with 2MB of L2 cache) is basically equal or faster than a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz (Prescott with 1MB of L2 cache) with HyperThreading. That’s crazy! Of course, HT enabled apps may show a little improvement but nothing dramatic. The Pentium M also only runs on a 400Mhz FSB while the Pentium 4 runs on a 800Mhz FSB. Lastly, the Pentium M operates at around 1/5 the power needed for a Pentium 4.

Intel knows it too. The next desktop Pentium 4-based iteration, codename Tejas was completely dumped and will be replaced eventually by a dual-core design based on the Pentium M.

I know! Thank goodness! The power requirements for Prescotts and above is simply ridiculous. I’m wondering how Intel is going to market that…what’s left for them to justify? Afterall, didn’t the Pentium 4 already speed up the Internet for us?

At any rate dual core is the future for now. I suspect both AMD and Intel…and even PowerPC will be sporting lots of conusmer dual core chip designs in the next couple of years. I figure those will be needed to run all of the neat stuff slated for Longhorn (with all eyecandy turned on).

Just wanted to comment on a few things about Apple…

First their benchmarks… look very carefully at the AMD-64 chip (it’s competition in the 64-bit market)... notice something?  Oh yeah there is only one AMD-64 chip going up against duek G5 chips… shucks that’s not rigged in any way

The next thing I want to take a few minutes to mention is Apple zealots (by zealot I mean those who think Apple does no wrong) constantly claiming Microsoft steals from Apple but Apple never steals from Microsoft.  Here is a nice list of things Microsoft had first and Apple eventually employed…

1.  Fast User Switching - But Apple claimed they made it cool so it wasn’t stealing

2.  Pre-emptive multi-tasking - All versions of Windows based on the NT kernel had this.  This is simply a fancy way of saying the operating system controls processes so if something freezes up you can usually kill it and not crash the computer.

3.  Built in support for multi button mice with scroll wheels - I think OS X was the first verion of Mac OS to implament this.

4.  Tabs - Yes basic every day tabs you use in a GUI were first found in Microsoft Windows.  Later if was found in Mac OS.

5.  Start menu - Yes when Windows 95 came out the most popular download for Mac OS was a program that acted like the start menu in Windows 95.  No Mac OS has a similar menu as part of the GUI.

6.  Online updates - A simple thing that Microsoft included with it’s Windows update.  Eventually Mac OS got it as well.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.  I’m not trying to base Apple or Mac users here by any means.  It just sickens me when an Apple zealot starts going on how great Apple is at innovation and how Microsoft steals everything.  Well sorry to tell you but all corporations steal from each other it’s just how business is done.  Apple is no more perfect then Microsoft is.  I’ll close with a couple more examples…

Remember when Apple went and sue Microsoft because Windows was a GUI which Apple claimed they invented?  Later it was found out that the GUI and mouse were both made by Xerox and Apple stole it from them.

And let’s not forget Apple going on how they have a super 64-bit system.  Yes the G5 is fully 64-bit.  But guess what the OS (until Tiger is released by the sounds of it) is still 32-bit with some 64-bit extensions.  The OS still can’t take full advantage of that great 64-bit power that Apple claims is so great.

Finally I just want to say that I’m just trying to debunk some misinformation about Apple.  I am in no way trying to say Apple is bad because it’s not.

i thought the reason why intel hasn’t hit the 64bit realm for end users was because it’s held back by ram.  is it true that 32bit tops off around 6 gigs of ram?  if that’s true, does that mean the whole 64bit is little overly/prehyped?
