If my patience fails me I plan to get a customized S170 but does anyone here have any idea as to whether there is a new TR in the works anytime soon… and available by the fall. I need a laptop for school next year so if there is no new TR which can perform like any possible configuration of the S I will get the S. But any ideas? (I’m starting to feel repetative (spelling?) so I’ll shut up now.)

There’s no word on this.

It is entirely possible as the newer Intel mobile platform will be out this fall. Whether or not Sony decides to use it is another matter. So, if you must buy now then you’ll need to see what works for you now.

Here’s my best guess for the next TR:

Intel Pentium M 1.1A or maybe 1.2 (Dothan based ULV)
Built-in GMA 900 graphics chipset and Azalea Audio
1GB max (same)
60GB 1.8” Hard Disk
DVD/RW or DVD/CDRW again
PCI-E slots
Intel PRO/Wireless 802.11a/b/g

This is based on what Intel is supposed to roll out next.

how much is that? looks like > $3000 to me
my spec is similar with u and it runs me ~$2600.  no software, but 80 gb, 256 mb (planning to get additional mb, sony sells 1x512 mb for like another ~$200, ripoff, better with kingston) and lowest dothan processor (1.5A ghz)

It’s like 4838 i think… but def over 4300 dollars

10th grade? ur joking right? do i sound like ur dad when i say that a pencil and notebook (spiral bound) got me thru? man save ur money and buy a tr, or go with a powerbook if u have a silver spoon in ur mouth.

that may be true. money can’t bring happiness..but it makes your life alot easier and opens alot of doors. i don’t wish i was bill gates but i wouldn’t mind trading places with hugh hefner though..

Way more than you need for the 10th grade.  When your backpack gets too cumbersome, you will wish you had gone for mobility rather than power.  The TR will turn more heads in school and should be able to handle whatever you throw at it….....unless you are a hardcore gamer.  Even still, I would go with the TR and play games at home.

I agree that the lack of funds can make it so difficult for some to just live.  Hugh Hefner?....now that’s going backwards!  You can be wealthy and still have a pure heart.  But there is nothing pure about that man.  What he promotes is even more shallow, not to mention degrading to women.

Newer 533Mhz FSB Pentium Ms are coming and should introduce faster models along with lower prices for “older” 400Mhz FSB models.

Yeah, supply/demand. Apparently, Intel is really trying to push the lower end models (i.e. 1.5 and 1.6Ghz) with the 1.7Ghz being the sweet spot. I’d take any of those as I think they would be fast enough. The 745 and 755, while nice, are just for bragging.

Also, the 1.5 - 1.7Ghz models should be easier to get since there’s more of them available.

I go to a private school. 2nd best in DC. We are a very close high school and close grade.. and no one steals other peoples stuff bcuz we have no need to in a sense. Everyone gets what they want or already has it or can get it in a pinch themselves. Only 478 students.

I already have a Powerbook…. and a G4 cube, G5, and G3 PowerPC. I need a PC for once. That is why this decision between the S and TR is a big decision.
