It uses USB2 and a 1” mini hard drive, probably a Hitachi or IBM unit. The USB plug folds away inside when not is use, a pretty neat feature. The casing is made out of brushed aluminum and it’s about as big as a business card. Knowing Sony, it’s also going to be very expensive. I already have a 1GB Memory Stick, which I don’t have to worry about dropping or failing. For file transfers, I use my iPod mini, the only inconvienence is having to carry around a cable. Still, I might pick one of these up if the price is right. 

2GB seems a bit small.. considering that there’s 2GB memory sticks out quarter of its size. but then again..its usb2 and its a sony so i think i’m have to get one too..

You can buy 2GB thumb drives for way under $400 now.  They are also USB 2.0 (no cables!)

another alternative if anyone plans to spend that much is the giga-vault.

just curious..bt has a very slow transfer rate compared to wifi,usb2,firewire,etc…any possibility of bt storage solutions..for small files like word documents..instead of those highly unreliable floppys.

Toshiba released a cool 5GB Bluetooth HDD a couple of years ago, but it has since gone OOP. It would be cool to have, but I would probably want to play a lot of high-bitrate videos, and BT wouldn’t be able to keep up. For small files like you said it would work great though.

I wonder what happened to those PCMCIA HDDs…I thought they would get bigger and cheaper by now…but sadly no more after 5GB.

I guess the move to the new format (PCI-E) means that they didn’t want to keep investing in those devices…

I have one, it isn’t that great and it heats up way too much.

Thanks for your advise-I used your links and spoke to some folks ,at the factory(s), personally.They were in Asia.

I purchased a USB 2.0-2gb and a USB 2.0-4gb memory stick(s) and by the way the prices on the 2gb were a bit less than your conservative estimates.

In addition..I was able to use SW to particion them in a way that requires
a password before it show the additional drive…......Great for keeping private Stuff.

I am not a Guru(far from it)However I do buy a no. of machines from Japan and have access to some(SW Gurus) and would be delighted to try and repay your favor.
