Does anyone understand the dif and interaction between MSN Messenger 6.2 and MS Messenger 4.7? I seem to have both on my system after being convinced to upgrade on some web page or another, but MSN messenger does not replace MS messenger and then they start to fight with each other.  I’ve removed messenger 4.7 once, but is somehow came back…was up with that!  I think outlook uses it for some reason.,..dunno, but it’s just a pain in the butt.  Anyone else ever see this Microsoft schizomess? thanks!

The latter one is actually Windows Messenger and thats installed by default with windows xp.

thanks but totally bogus! these instructions dont work with outlook 2003 (options not there) nor are the registry entries on my XP!  i dont see how it’s being kicked off, but it is.  deleting the program files just makes more problems like errors and there is no uninstall feature.  what a MS hose job!
To prevent Windows Messenger from signing in when you run Outlook:
In Outlook, click Options on the Tools menu.
On the Other tab, click to clear the Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook check box.
Click OK.
Windows Messenger 4.5 or Later on Windows XP Home Edition-Based or Windows XP Professional-Based Computers
Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
Locate and click the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft
On the Edit menu, point to New, click Key, and then type Messenger for the name of the new registry key.
Locate and click the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger
On the Edit menu, point to New, click Key, and then type Client for the name of the new registry key.
Locate and click the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client
On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then type PreventRun for the name of the new DWORD value.
Right-click the PreventRun value that you created, click Modify, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor.
NOTE: This method also prevents programs that use the Messenger Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) from using Windows Messenger. Outlook 2002, Outlook Express 6, and the Remote Assistance feature in Windows XP are examples of programs that use these APIs and that depend on Windows Messenger.

I dont know about outlook but to prevent it from starting with windows, those instructions worked fine for me.

jiggy, you may want to try google searching to find solutions for getting rid of your MS conflict….unless someone here has a specific fix…....

i looked for a bit, but the SMARTEST people on the net are HERE….they got TRs so that proves it.

if you’re talkign about MSN messnenger starting whenever Outlook 2003 starts, then yes they changed how you do it.  It is under the options menu in the other tab, there’s this thing about using your contacts (it’sa check box near the bottom) you have ot make sure that is unchecked.  See outlook uses MSN messengers contacts as an autocomplete feature.  You turn that off, and it won’t start up.  I’d give you exact instructions, but i don’t have 2003 on this PC, but i’ve done it on my other ones.

If you want to disable the messanger (windows alert system)

Go to Run
Type in: services.msc
Find Messenger
Double Click it
Click STOP
Change startup to disabled
Click Apply

Thanks to Microsoft’s usual brilliance in naming products, we’re discussing no less than 3 distinct pieces of software in this thread with the same god-damn name. 

well MSN messenger and Windows Messenger are the same thing.

Messenger Service is actually named different, as it has the word “Service” appeneded to the end of it.  however since Messenger has no purpose what-so-ever, they should call it something along the lines of, “why the hell did we make this.com”

FOUND THAT!  they just need to update thier ANTI-knowledge base…thanks.  (that sure was an obscure click!)

I have a another MSN Messenger problem here when using Hotmail.

The problem is whenever I log in to my Hotmail to check email, the MSN messenger just automatically lauched (where it was not launched before that) and this cause the web page to freeze for a few second before I can actually click on the email. Also, whenever I return to the Mail box, the MSN messenger re-launched again! and this caused a few more second to freeze the page again!

Does anyone here know what is going on, and how to stop the MSN Messenger to launch when I use Hotmail.
