What scheme/theme you using? for the icons i mean.

it is funny, but can someone say if Opera is like all the other choices listed here?  i was amazed on all the extra features it has over IE.  i feel like i have been surfing in the stone age all these ie6 years. and now, finally, a browser that plays all the different radio feed formats without choking!!! i am a happy US talk-radio junkie here in asia now….

I’ve tried all of the different browsers, and none of them work 100% with every site out there.  IE has seemed to work flawlessly with all the sites I visit on a regular basis, so why not just continue using it?  I have my built-in popup blocker with the Google Toolbar, but unfortunately no tabbed browsing which is something I can easily live without.

man, once ya try tabbed browsing ya wont be able to live without it. the VERY BEST thing about Opera that i like is that when it’s closed and then opened, it will go back to the pages you had opened, like a radio station, and start it up.  Also, if you leave a page open like this one, it periodically updates the page so you can follow a thread that way.  and then there is the complete control over the look and feel of the GUI, as i am a freak like that…u can change skins, the icons, the fonts, etc…so now my TR is look’in exactally like the MacOSx that i wish I had.

ps.I still have IE for those occassional pages that dont work.  so far i’ve only found one, an activeX page that scans for spyware…

The good thing about competition in this arena is that eventually IE will start to copy the best features from some of these alternative browsers in order to maintain their market prowess.  Its always the way with MS.

Not with 95% market share it isn’t. A popup blocker will only first be available in XP SP2. Opera’s had this since the late Cretaceous Period. The only thing making them do anything is the current uproar about browser security.

Good point.  MS would probably screw it up anyways, and it would eat up like 300-400mb of ram, forcing everyone to upgrade to the latest and greatest OS from the software giant.  Isn’t marketing just grand?

i agree with u erik, i wonder why one would go the trouble to switch from IE? can anyone give us a compelling reason? Opera actually looks like it has promise with skins and all - i am all into making my interface look better….but my IE already looks like a mac browser due to styleXp and the OSX theme.

EXCELLENT article on slate, thanks for that!  Using the authors logic, i am even safer using Opera, as that must be .001 percent of the market or some such ridiculous number.  Its an interesting situation, where the most popular software is the most vunerable.  MAybe IBM should ressurect the lost OS2 WARP browser and port to windows, try to get back in the game :xeno:

What I’d really love to see is a Windows version of KHTML. The one major browser engine I can’t test DHTML on my workstation at work is Safari/Konqueror.

Oddly enough… it’s possible! All you need is Cygwin and KDE-Cygwin . It only likes my primary monitor, but here’s a screenshot . (warning dial-up users: this sucker’s over 600k). OSS rules. 8)
