I’m using NewsGator to keep up to date with the forum via RSS, and it seems to continuously download the same threads. It turns out each time someone adds to a thread it downloads again. I contacted the vendor for Newsgator and they’ve looked into the issue to make sure it wasn’t their product. According to them it’s the feed itself. I’ve posted their response below in the hopes that it will make sense to someone else:
Hi Tom,
It looks like the problem is as follows. Whenever a new post is added for a particular topic in that feed, ALL of the posts for that topic get updated to say something like
“Topic Replies: 4”
When a new post is added, all of the old ones in that thread get updated to show the new number of replies.
Since the feed doesn’t use the RSS <guid> element, there isn’t any way for NewsGator to tell that the items updated in this fashion aren’t new elements; so it shows them again. The option you’ve disabled, about modified posts, will only work for feeds that support <guid> - so it won’t help on this feed.
Unfortunately, for this feed, I don’t think there is anything you’re going to be able to do, other than convincing the feed publisher to change things around a bit. Ideally, they should stop updating old items when new items are added, and further, they should switch to RSS 2.0 and use the <guid> element.
Is this anything that can be changed [easily]? :D
Thanks again,
Tom
