WARNING! DO NOT UPGRADE UR INTEL EXTREME GRAPHICS DRIVER if u value the 1024x600 mode (or the 640x480). They seem to have been removed from the driver 6.14.10.3792…dated this year, as downloaded from the intel website. Thank buddha i had set a restore point before the install. Intels installer does not.
So what’s up with that folks? in my opinion, the 1024x600 looks best on the TR, the higher res’s are too small for my older eyes, and the 1024x768 makes evertthing look squished, its worthless. in fact, i would go as far to to say that without the 1024x600 res I would can this one and get a mac.
Can someone shed some light here, and perhaps post the lastest level driver that DOES support 1024x600 and 640x480 - which comes in handy for web developers….
To be honest i never saw the point of that zoom button anyway, even the best scaling tft’s look crap in windows at any resolution other than their native one to me.. When buying a laptop or tft one of the most important things is to make sure you can handle the native resolution in an everyday capacity because otherwise you’re really not making the most of it.
Personally i run the latest drivers from the intel site to get the most out of the graphics card for the few games i do play on my TR.. it would take a lot more than missing a few non-native resolutions to make me rollback!
EDIT: just reread your post, and i’d have to say 640x480 is pretty much unnecessary for web developers these days - i was reading last week that 1024x768 is now the most widely used resolution by people viewing websites with 800x600 dropping dramatically- You’d have to be designing a pretty specialist site (and i dare say not very pretty ) these days if it required 640x480 compatibility. Still fair play if you are.
I just think to most people your Post Subject is a little over-dramatic.

Arsenal, i don’t think anyone here would ever think me over-dramatic, would u all? a f*&%^ng raving lunatic perhaps
seriously, i have no idea what u mean by using the zoom button, i NEVER use it. but i do have the xbrite set to 1024x600. For intel to pull that resolution is just NUTS. And as far as web development goes, the stuff u read only applies to the developed world. here in poorer parts of the world, where there still are 386’s hooked to a phone line, i still check to make sure that something is readable in 640x480. it’s just a quick check to be fair to all readers, regardless of economic status and good/bad karma.
the thing that bugs me the most is i spent all that time designing my desktop
for 1024x600, and then Intel yanked it! so either i have to redesign, or stay back level. i feel ripped. or am i raving again?
I would think most TR’s are factory set at native resolution of 1280x768. The Zoom but being the quick way to go back & forth between 1280x768 & 1024x600.
I mainly stick with 1280*768 but if I’m using the TR in bed rested on my stomach to browse web I set at at 1024X600 with a quick press of the button.

Heheh okay fair enough, sorry i knew there was someone here in Nepal, but didn’t see it was you this time.. 640x480 now makes sense to me if you actually have to develop for that sort of audience. I can only imagine the sort of looks you must get with your TR if thats the sort of hardware they are used to!!
About your desktop, yep that is a bit of a pain in the butt i’d imainge you had to design it completely from scratch as well as i don’t think i’ve ever heard of anyone using 1024x600 as their default resolution.
Anyway sorry again.. you are absolutely right , it seems stupid to lose resolutions if there aren’t comparable gains to be made by upgrading.
yeah ars, most folks are blown away by the size and screen, but its not because people here are behind the times, they are just CHEAP. most nepalese see no point in paying more that 500 USD for a desktop, and have little use for a laptop, in general. they don’t work while drinking tea at the tea shop, for example. everyone has the coolist/newest/fanciest cell phone however….
jigs
I would think most TR’s are factory set at native resolution of 1280x768. .
I agree. And Jiggy, if you want bigger font size in 1280x768 simply adjust your display dpi: desktop (right click) / properties / Settings / Advance / General / Font Size ... adjust it to a higher value.
This way you won’t be sacrificing the resolution ... which is the reason I bought the tr
well, thanks for that but i am not sacrificing anything. the tr looks grand in 1024 x 600, and i am using themes from style XP so it get tricky, but i am using larger fonts.
i am just amazed that intel can do that. that’s it. next time i go powerbook with tiger OS. i’ve had it. 20 years and we are still fiddling with ini files and drivers. hey, am i being “dramatic” again? seriously, i love my TR, just the way it is…
We’ve sorta gone over the video driver upgrade conumdrum. Basically, don’t install newer versions unless they come from Sony. I believe any of the 13.x versions are ok but the introduction of the 14.x versions breaks the zoom feature. If you don’t require the zoom feature then you can go ahead and install the Intel direct drivers.
I’d leave the video drivers alone unless you specifically need to upgrade because some program you use requires a newer version of the driver.
Lastly, the smallness of the screen is well…no kidding! It’s a 10.6” screen! Actually, I’ve done a few simple things that makes it much more usable in my opinion. Instead of the standard 32x32 icons, I’ve upped mine to 48x48 and increased all font settings by 1. I use StyleXP as well and simply edited the skin I was using to use a larger, more readable font. It all works well.
I thought the zoom was a waste, until my mom wanted to use my TR to type something. She said it was hard for her to read the screen. I hit the zoom and she didn’t complain (as much).
Second time using the zoom (the first being the day I got the unit and had no idea what the button did).
i’ve done the same groove….i assume u are in 1280x768 and not 1024x600. i must be the only one that likes that resolution, barring other owner’s mothers. btw, i never use the zoom button, i just right click the driver icon to change modes.
groove, do u know the what is the LATEST 1.3 style driver? i should at least try that. YzDock is hosed, don’t know what else to try….
I think this is the last version that works with the Zoom button.
And yes, I use 1280x768. I lot of the programs I use don’t like 1024x600. Heck, I don’t like it because it doesn’t room for me to get any meaningful work done.

danubhad groovethang! that bumped me up from 6.13.01.3485 to a whooping 6.14.10.3732 and everything that worked before, still works.
I must have been in the field when the Zoom button thread went on…but if new drivers BREAK the zoom button, boy if i were use guys id be pissed. but i’m just doing meaningless work in 1024x600 so i am happy as a clam—- except for this YzDock thing…starting from scratch i have the same problem, folders added have NO icon to begin with and when i try to change it CRASH. i bet it has something to do with StyleXP and the icon set I am now using huh. I guess I could go back to the default XP icons and run the test all over again…but not today.

Yeah thats what I would suggest. This is not like a desktop that is playing the latest DirectX games and would require the latest drivers. If the system is stable, leave the video drivers alone…unless you have a real need to update them.

I’m the one who started this whole mess by suggesting he upgrade to the latest Intel drivers to see if that would help his Y’z Dock problem. I did so because Y’z Dock uses things like transparency and lower-level GDI calls that are affected by driver problems.

So your to blame, huh? I wasn’t speaking directly to jiggy, just in general, for users of the TR, I wouldn’t suggest updating the drivers unless they really need to. Most users think the newest drivers must be better then the old ones and even though I don’t have a need I should update them.
