[quote author=“Drachen”]My brother is looking at the Network Walkman (all his music is in ATRAC due to the fact that he has a Vaio PC) but the price is definitely scaring him off. He’s an avid jogger, so he wants something to be as light and inobtrusive as humanly possible.
LOL, check it off ebay.com man, I found an NW-E3 (64 tho) for about 70 dollars, and it normally goes for about 399 retail. Check off some backsuppliers locally too, that ought to keep price down.
are there any memory stick pro mp3 players out there or is there any sign of any being developed, i think it would be a great idea, especially since there is a memory stick slot on the tr for ease of transfer
There used to be more of these models but Sony seems to be moving away from that…as most manufacturers are. They figure it’s simply easier to plug the device directly into your system since it doesn’t require extra drivers in most cases.
And even if they did…the logical choice is the use of Memory Stick DUO cards since they allow smaller designs. Of course, there is a little limitation of the current 512MB size (which are scarce) and the price. Of course, as memory sizes of these devices get bigger and bigger, the need for memory slots lessens.

Sony currently sells two. The catch is that they don’t support ATRAC3 on MS Pros and they… er… come with an integrated PDA .

I use an older Network Walkman (NW-MS9) and I have been very happy with it. I primarily use it when I am working out and the size is perfect for discreet carry. I like the newer NW (NW-MS90D) with the embedded memory, smaller form factor and up to an additional 512mb on a Pro Duo memory stick. I am trying to convince myself that I need to upgrade, but the price is holding me back (so far).
well, i got a peg t665c for sale that comes complete with a mem stick duo 128, keyboard, car charger, the works. in my opinion though the whole thing is worthless as an mp3 player, as sony desiged thier clies to NOT be able to play unprotected mp3 files without a BIG hassle. im sorry if i sound like a broken record but just get an ipod and u will be happy.

They just came out with the NW-MS70Ds or NW-MS90Ds or so, 512MB storage, but a ittle chunky. The NW-E3 for me was the best, got it off ebay for 30 bucks, and smaller than an iPod, and seriously resilient. But for max sweetness, iPod definitely rawks the Sony’s, even though the Sonys are cuter.
Actually, Sony’s VAIO Pocket, aka the anti-MP3 player, is actually a good device if you can get past the ATRAC3/3plus format. Yes, I have one I’m reviewing right now. I’m also an ATRAC-whor….enthusiast for what it’s worth. The ability to see CD/Album covers when listening to music is actually a really nice gimmick. Even my iPod friends are like, “Whoa! That’s rad!”
I’d say that the only thing that really mars the VAIO Pocket is the software. Sonic Stage 2, while an improvement over SS 1.5, cannot touch iTunes. It feels like Sonic Stage 2 was really more designed for smaller capacity devices and MD devices with VAIO Pocket support added as an afterthought.
At any rate, I’ll go over all of this stuff in detail once I post the review. I will say that once you get past the software and have all of your songs loaded with their album titles then the device simply rocks. It feels good, looks good, and sounds good.
Well here’s my rant:
FASHION, FASHION FASHION.
The ipod is the biggest fashion item and rip-off i’ve ever seen. Fact is being an apple fan, i actually like the design. But there are incredibly expensive, and suffer from this crap battery life and expensive proprietry replacemeny method which is expensive and a pain in the butt.
How can anyone justify paying $500+ for a walkman?! Because let’s face it - it’s just a walkman. My God, buy a CD walkman now with anti-shock and MP3 capability and you are looki ng at, what, $100? Max! I see people with ipods and think - you fashion victim. I can’t wait until the competitors bring out somehting, cheaper, with more storage. Who cares if it’s all funky and white? The design isn’t that great technologically speaking. I can’t believe there are so many people out there with $500 bucks burning a hole in their pockets so that they can waste a couple of months food bill on a walkman.
The fact that it’s a fully-functional, firewire-enabled portable hard drive makes it more than that. Most of my Mac-head frineds have a bootable system on their iPods. It cuts down on most of the equipment he has to bring with him to a client. If you’re going to price-compare HD-based jukeboxes, I agree, the iPod is a rip-off, but you can’t really compare it to an MP3 CD player or even a flash-based player. All are for different audiences. The CD player is for someone who doesn’t change around their playlists a lot. There’s a very finite amount of music that will fit on a CD, and unless you’re using CD-RWs, you’ll have to burn a new CD every time you add/remove music from it. It’s also best not to use a CD player if you move around a lot, for example if you are a runner. The flash-based ones are for even smaller subsets of your collection. When I used my Clie with a even with a 512 MB MS, I was constantly suffling tracks in and out of the device. With my iRiver, all of that management is gone. I don’t have to pick and choose tracks as much. I just rip and copy. Whn I get to a song I don’t feel like playing, I just hit next.
Apart from the battery issue, the iPod isn’t too much of a rip off relatively speaking since no one else makes one that’s simply as good. Well, the only one who makes something good is iRiver. Everything else sucks…so, iPod is worth the money. It’s easy to use and the software that interacts with it (iTunes) is far and away the better audio management software out there.

roger on all of that gruuveee…blabla-kin battery pack solved the battery issue for me….it even CHARGES the ipod battery (probally a defect). so i use 4 - 2200 rechargables and it lasts forvever…well, long enough. i am going to configure a way to charge it from the royal enfield next
Anybody use the iPod mini?
Cause I put in an order for a pink after checking them out @ my local Apple store. I swear, that was the first time ever I had stepped into there. But God, I think the store decor alone could’ve made me a Machead.

Haha, are you kidding me? Go to ipodlounge.com? Man, after ordering that iPod, I have spent more time there than anywhere else, here included. I think i maxed out my credit just buying all those accessories. Look at the Vaja i-Vod case for the iPod, that alone warrants my buying an iPod. Hohoho.
