I’ve just set up a wireless network for my parents as they’ve just got broadband.  I’ve hooked my dad’s work printer up to the study computer (running XP) so that everyone can use it.
The problem is that I can’t get my dad’s laptop (running 2000) to see the study computer in ‘my network places’ as so use the printer.  When I first set up the network card it worked fine, but I think when my dad went back to the office it reset some settings and now I can’t get it to work.  I’ve tried changing the workgroup to MSHOME like the other computers but it doesn’t make a difference.
Am at a loss and don’t think dad is best pleased about not being able to print at the moment!  Any suggestions :?

can you ping the desktop from dad’s laptop vice versa?

By the way, what you can try for sharing ressources between both machines, is to create an account on the XP machine with the same to login information(login, password) of your win 2k machine. I used to do like this for activating the windows native sharing of the adsl internet connection connected to my win2k machine (unfortunately i didn’t have router at that time :D ).

Well I’ve only just got around to trying this again….

I can ping any other computer on my network from my dad’s laptop, but I can’t ping my dad’s laptop from any other computer
I can see my dad’s computer in my network places, but selecting it just brings up the usual ‘access permissions’ error box.

I’ve tried all of this with windows firewalls disabled.  Any other ideas :?

The strange thing is that when my dad installed the wireless network card everything worked fine, but now it doesn’t… could his work network have over-ridden some settings somewhere??

Turns out that my dad’s work laptop has zonealarm installed but it hadn’t set the network ip’s correct to allow access…. stupid technology!
