i know that it’s not song-specific, it’s for all audio. it kicks in with DVDs, CDs, and MP3s alike…
the bass boost IS the problem, but without the bass boost and without an external equalizer, you get shit for bass.

I totally agree with jiggy.
I never had the feeling that bass sound is bad by using ITunes without Sony Bass boost.
Even with my cheap Headphones

[quote author=“vready”]Don’t know if this will help, but try pressing Fn + B on the keyboard which will toggle the Sony Bass Boost on and off.
Thank you for this. I was having the same issue as the original poster and this solved it. I also found that using Media Player 9 instead of SonicStage, which comes with the TR and does a lot of processing on the sound (to its detriment, I think), improved the listening quality a great deal.
As an aside, I just got a pair of Sennheiser HD 497’s and they work great plugged right into the TR listening to my WMAs. I also have a pair of Sennheiser HD 570s I bought a few years ago but these new ones work much better with the laptop and they match, too!

Hi, I’m new to posting here in the forums, but just a little bit of my .02 ;>
The first time I noticed this “volume limiter” on my TR3A that you mention about was when I first discovered the Bass Boost settings ( lo and behold ). Yes, I too have noticed how the sounds seems to back down as the bass becomes louder on parts of the music I listen to both through headphones and through my 40-watt ( 60-watt-capable ) CA sound system when it’s hooked up.
At first it wasn’t too bad of a problem, and I started readjusting the Treble when seemed to help a little, but the treble seemed to weaken the quality of the music in some respects, so I returned the settings to medium Bass Boost. Since then, I’ve been “accustomed” to the fluctuating nature of the music when I play it on my TR ( otherwise, I generally use my Creative Nomad when it comes to music ).
I notice the “volume limiter” less when watching DVDs though, or DivX or other shows, but I guess that’s just because I pay more attention to the visual than the audio. : >
Ok, I hope your problem is fixed. I’d sure like to find a solution to this, too, if such exists. Personally, I believe it exists within software, but I guess that depends on the hardware being used as well.

welcome to TR world Concura!
my guess is that DVD players like cyberlink PowerDVD and the version of DVD player that somes with BYPASS the bass boost somehow and uses it’s own audio processor. just a guess from what i’ve noticed with certian DVD players on the TR (I evaulated several before ditching the installed one for cyperlink’s).
i forgot which one, i think it was the one that came with the TR, had the annoying habit of disabling audio when i had musicmatch installed, ie. that after DVD play, musicmatch was mute until reboot. so i ditched both.
good luck all

gah, i’d rather not use iTunes… from what i’ve seen of it when using a mac, it is just way too much of a hastle. it takes up a big portion of screen space (i don’t know about disk space), and the retarded Mac system made me copy every single damn song to the iTunes folder on the hard drive; you couldn’t even play off of a CD!
i don’t know if the windows iTunes is different (and can you DL it for free?), but i really don’t like the mac one.

dlo - U MUST GET IT! i dont know about older mac versions but itunes 4.6 FREE download is probally the BEST software that i have on the TR. I mean it. it does everything its supposed to - suprising - never have had a problem - there is a great forum called ipodlounge to ask questions, just like here, see . but the most amazing thing is that it keeps track of your music library like no one’s business. u dont even have to copy the files into the library if u dont want to, u can go straight to ur ipod or just use it to play cds.
it has a mini player advanced feature that takes up hardly any space and if u need the hack to make it stay on top, let me know and i will dig out (handy). the interface is easy to use, it’s easy to manage playlists (which in many programs is just insane) and the Music Store works flawlessly (although u cant easily make CDs of what u buy).
I just can’t say enough about it. that program alone and my ipod are the best reasons that i have for putting up with an IBM clone computer.
and it also solves ur Bass Boost problem!

jiggy,
i appreciate all your input and replies. i tried out itunes and unfortunately it still has the same mediocre bass output =\ since i can’t adjust an equalizer for my headphones, i’m stuck with the hardware boost, which sucks. i really need to find either an independent bass boost program, or sony needs to realize that this driver is fucking annoying and fix it.

Darnies dLo, either my ears are not as sensitive as yours or there is something else you can do. I remember seeing a click for headphones or speakers - not in itunes but in XP, and maybe that would help…how do u like itunes besides that?
like i said, i have the TR plugged into a stereo, and when i have electricity that sounds great, otherwise i use the ipod and the e71s.
ps. are u that cute or is that ur daughter?
