is it possible to use one speaker system for two computers?  if so how can i split my speaker system to use it with my vaio when i want or to use it with my desktop system?  easily.

Well if your speaker system’s amp has multiple inputs for cd, aux in etc, can’t you just use a different one for each computer, then you just select the imput you want on the front of the amp.  That’s how I switch between my desktop and my digital radio in my room.

Either that or you could buy a stereo RCA A/B switchbox at your neighborhood Radio Shack for under $10.

I also use a switching box with 4 stereo RCA inputs and one out to my stereo’s AUX channel. Works fine for me.

sorry to be so dense.  but what exactly do i need?  and how do i do it?  instead of pluggin the speakers into the desktop directly do i plug it into the splitter then from the splitter to the desktop and the vaio then use the a/b to choose between?

The following assumes that the speakers connect to the computer via the normal 3.5mm stereo mini jack (like a headphone jack):

Ideally, you’d want a splitter (you just want two right?) or switchbox that can handle 3.5mm stereo mini jacks. In that case, you’d buy a pair of long male/male stereo mini wires (to plug into the computers) and plug them into the box/splitter and the speakers on the other end.

If you can only get the RCA switchbox, you need a pair of long male stereo mini to male RCA stereo Y cables (from the computers to the switchboxes) and a female stereo mini to male RCA stereo Y adaptor (to plug the speakers into the switchbox).
