Just got a TR3 yesterday and was wondering what are the benefits of going through the hassle of installing a fresh XP system ? are there any gain in performance??
also, how do i contact Sony about sending me the recovery DVD? ( btw, i live in NYC)

yes, there is definitely a gain in performance since a lot of junk software which most people wouldn’t need goes out.
I called up Sony to ask them about Windows XP…that I wanted a disc since I was under the impression I would get one. However, for that they told me no but sent me the recovery dvd’s when I started inquiring a few things from the guy about doing a clean install and getting all the hardware to work. May be you could tell them that you’ve already formatted the machine and now you cant make a recovery cd.

Well I guess Sony India/Asia is nicer than Sony US… I tried calling the vaio support line (1-888-4SONYPC) , and they forwarded me to Sony parts to order the recovery dvd, which you apparantly have to pay for.

oops, sorry for not mentioning, but I was in USA only when I called up Sony and asked them to send me the recovery dvd’s.

Dunno how many years it will take to introduce this laptop in India. Besides, barely any people in India can afford to spend soooo much money on a laptop like this….and customer support in India….dunno if that exists

I’m upgrading to XP Pro from this documentation- so far it looks like all’s well, except one thing. For some reason, when I boot, it gives me a menu option for which OS I want to boot to - XP Home or XP Pro.
I did a clean install - new partitions/formatting before installing Pro. At the menu, If I select XP Pro all’s well. If I choose XP Home, I get an error that a DLL is missing, but I can go back and choose XP Pro. Which kind of makes sense, since I blew Home out of the drive. Why am I getting this option? Is there some way I can dismantle this menu and just boot to XP Pro? I thought it might be something with the BIOS. Tried the most recent BIOS driver from Sony’s TR driver’s page - but no change. Thanks a lot for any help!

right click on my computer->Properties. Click the Advanced Tab and under Startup and recovery, click settings. Now click the Edit button under System Startup and under [operating systems] delete the line for the Home edition..save the file and next time it should automatically boot into Windows XP.

THANK YOU Rahul!! That did it. And thanks again for all this great documentation - I could not have ventured this without it. There have been a couple small changes for upgrading a TR3A (Like there are 8 recovery disks and a startup - Sony Shared Library Files are on Disk 6. And if you want to run the Recovery Device Wizard, you have to put in Disk 1, NOT the start-up disk). But when I am fnished I’ll post anything else new…

you’re most welcome…
in my write up I mentioned 1 startup disc and 9 other discs numbered from 1 to 9 so when I mentioned disc 1 it referred to the disc numbered 1

I dont know if what ur suggesting will work, but trust me the method that I used (as I’ve mentioned I picked that up from some place else) worked perfectly for me. You just need to run the driver recovery wizard and all those directories will be created and u simply need to update the drivers in the device manager using those mappings. Incase you dont have the driver recovery wizard, u can get it from here

Rahul,
A thousand thanks for this advice and for posting the drivers and utilities. I really didn’t think I’d be able to make the clean install work but with your help I did.
The hotkeys were a mystery for a while but they started working after I updated the USB2.0 drivers, I don’t know if the 2 are linked.
I have a UK TR1MP and your instructions and drivers worked perfectly. I now have no partition nor the crappy apps that Sony installed.
Deep joy.

Hello Rahul…
As its your tutorial that I followed, I’m wondering if you’d have any thoughts on a problem I’m having with my TR3AP2. Please see my question at:

Hoping you have some thoughts.
Thanks!
