i’ve turned off Outllooks built in filter to test spambayes for the next couple of weeks, but ur right, outlooks 2003 updated filter does a good job, i had it set to HIGH and it was getting 100% but it was also getting ham as well and i had to always check the folder.  hoping spambayes can do as well or better. 

having both of them on seemed to slow things down a bit considerably!  and for me, outlook 2003 is already slow enough…if it gets much slower i will have to find another solution…even though i really like the function.

They’re wrong (zdnet often is). I am looking for the link with the actual Outlook 2003 rule breakdown, but the biggest indication is that MS updates the spam rules for Outlook periodically. With Bayesean filtering, that wouldn’t make much sense. Baysean filters work through compiling and comparing word scores based on frequency in recieved spam and ham. If MS knows what’s in your email, you have bigger problems than spam!

In any case, I’m very curious as to the results of both of your experiments with the program.

they say they have 25 million users…i was one before outlook 2003 hit the streets.  it’s fun, supports multiple POPs and hotmail type accounts both, and is kinda fun to play with.  You can create custom mail templates easily, and there are a lot of cheesy ones u can download.  it even has a handwritten signature utility to scrawl ur own name in an unrecognizable DR. fashion. and even spell check.

it lacked a real archive facility, that’s what i remember i did not like. and importing contacts into the program was easy, but forget exporting. one by one vcards!

anyway, outlook 2003 seems to make it all a mute point.  it just seems to be the best pim out there in windows, and with all those people writing plugins it keeps getting better.

If by plugins you mean viruses and exploits, and if by “mute” point you mean, don’t use it - then um, yeah.   The Outlook/IE security model leaves quite a lot to be desired.  Flaws in the suite are compounded when Outlook uses the MSHTML control to render e-mails (if you can exploit IE, you can usually exploit Outlook with the same trick).

Maybe I’m just bitter.

Really?  are we a tad bit paranoid here?  i think i must live in one of the most virus-ridden parts of the world - ya can almost see afganistan from here - and us smart folks just keep norton and ms XP up to date.  no problems so far.

But i am not so naive to think anyone of us is safe from virus attack,  regardless of the software we use, well, except if we are lucky owners of that G4…with OS X…

ps. i used to be a lotus notes developer in a previous life, and years ago i would never have recommended ANY ms product…but now that i am old and just can’t deal with complicated software interfaces and reinstalls every month, outlook 2003 seems to be the only choice for someone wanting email, contact, appointment, task, and office integration.  is there something else?

okay, here are my testing results of SPAMBAYES outlook addin v1.01rc1 (may2004) after 7 days,  using outlook 2003 and POP3 x2 and HTML accounts x3:

* it works for pop3 accounts very well, i trained it using 500+ hams and 50+ spams, i never even get a “suspect” just puts the crap where it belongs.
* it does nothing for HTML accounts like Hotmail.  I have 3 hotmail accounts and Spambayes refuses to ever recognize the spams in those inboxes.  I do have spambayes configured correctly as far as i can tell (all inboxes are included).  I’ve even tried dragging the spam over to my pop3 inbox, then delete from there using delete as spam training feature.  no dice.

so to sum up: how the heck do i turn on the microsoft outlook spam filter back on?  i turned it off during testing but for the life of me cant remember where that click is…

further conclusions:  maybe i DO need a penis enlargement.  i sure get a lot of offers in that regard. also, SPAMBAYES has potential, but I don’t see any benifit of using it over MS strategy if one is using Outlook. Whatever the MS filter does, it works just as well on POP3 accounts and it also works on HTML accounts.
