Ok, never done a poll before and since I am right in the email mood I thought I’d ask a question about that.
I am just the proud owner of a free GMAIL account - which gives you 1 GIGABYTE of free email space and the user interface is really nice! (This is the new email provided by google.com and I think that so far one can only get accounts by invites, etc - so it’s fun to get in EARLY and take a good name. Otherwise I’d have to be Tiffany_TR_1920_XYZ(at)gmail.com (or something like that) a few years from now. NOW I got a cool, sweet account name!)
So..I use gmail.
What does the rest of you use (I know many people use a number of accounts - but which one is your primary one)?
been using hotmail ever since I started using the net. Even yahoo has raised their storage limit to 100 mb…I hope hotmail does the same too soon, and hopefully remove some of their other restrictions too!
[quote author=“gr00vy0ne”]I use my own server/own e-mail but I also have accounts at all the major e-mail services like Yahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail.
I’m trying to use Gmail more now since it’s new and voluminous.
Question-What’s the kick to using Gmail, I mean, it’s great in volume in all, but do you really want to keep all the letters from Aunt Mai three years ago? (edit: maybe i’m just jealous-all my friends got Gmail accounts, and I’m stuck with Yahoo. )
The interface is one of the draws as it’s a new way of displaying, archiving, and searching through e-mail. That’s about it. Of course, Outlook 2003 does a half-way decent job of doing this as well.
I’m not saying you should - but if you for any reason at all would find yourself desperate in need of a GMAIL account before it’s public release so that you can lock in your own name you COULD try http://www.gmailswap.com . The highest monetary swap I’ve seen was 10 dollars so seems pretty harmless.
Hmm ... let’s see now. I have a bunch of redirectors (some free, some not), but all the mail gets stored on my ISP until my own mail daemon collects it and puts it on my private server, which has a web interface. So, I get remote access of my mail, but I have to pay for the electricity. At least it’s under my control.
I also have a Hotmail account, which I like because I can use Outlook (Express) to pull messages into my archive without resorting to message forwarding.
Lastly, I managed to land a gmail account, which I like for its lack of overt UI-design-for-the-sake-of-eye-candy. The account is pretty new, so I can’t say much about stability, but I assume, by Google’s records, that it should be reliable. I just wish it would display messages in plain text and there was a way to later pull it into my own archives (for backup purposes).
Until recently I was required to use CompuServe because of corporate requirements. Fortunately that has recently changed and I can get rid of LOUSY CompuServe. They have the worst billing department and provide almost no service for a rather high price. Good riddance.
That poll should have allowed you to answer multiple choices…I checked hotmail because I use that the most, but I have my personal site as well as several others including GMail.
