Does anyone think that the TR can replace a desktop PC. I know you can just get a keyboard and external monitor to hook up to your the TR, but is the TR powerful enough to cope with heavy desktop use e.g. graphics, video and audio editing and programming etc.
Since the day I got my TR, my Desktop-PC’s aren’t used much anymore. (I really love that baby :D)
I use it for all my work (that’s Office, Mindmap and Web-Development including some GraphicDesign in Fireworks)
Normally I don’t even use an external monitor and/or keyboard.
I think it depends a lot on what you plan to do. When it comes to big Graphics and Video it could be a problem but I don’t have much experience with that sort of things.
And if you like to play Games it’s definitly not a replacement for a Desktop PC.
man u can ditch the desktop! i went to a TR almost a year ago and never looked back. i have an icurve stand, a cheap silver keyboard, and an adaptec x-hub 7 with pic ture stand. this system beats any desktop i’ve owned so far (although ive used some others mac G5s and that makes me drool…)
i push the little guy to the limit however, audio and video production….and massive photoshop work.
the only thing i miss about a desktop is the raw power and internal storage some of them have.
but if u want a nice home machine i dont believe ya can get anthing better. well, maybe this:
MAC G4 power book:
• 1.5GHz PowerPC G4 with 128MB Graphics Memory
• 2GB DDR333 SDRAM - 2 SO-DIMMs
• 80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 5400rpm
• SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
• AirPort Extreme Card
• Apple Cinema Display (20” flat panel) + Apple DVI-to-ADC Adapter
• Professional 17 Backpack Case by Brenthaven
• Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
• 17-inch TFT Display
[quote author=“Tiffany”]I also abandoned my desktop after getting the TR.
BUT - if I was doing a lot of graphical editing I would ofcourse have to get an external and bigger monitor - and some more memory…
Right now I’m “All TR all the time”
TR
hey good for u tif! i found that by putting the TR on a icurve stand and even using the 1024 x 600 resolution and high powered reading glasses i can do all my graphics, albiet they aren’t very good…
i refuse, i repeat refuse to have any more hardware cluttering up my tiny himalayan hideaway, even though one of those big mac monitors or maybe a samsung wall size flat plasma TV/monitor would also be cool…
Portable computing is a revelation. If you are working for clients, then being able to take your work to them on a laptop is a real boon. I stopped using desktops a couple of years ago at home, and have not looked back. It is all relative to what do with your machines though. You can not get the grunt you get with a desktop on a laptop and for some that really matters.
I’d say no. If I have to do a lot of work, I’d still prefer my desktop since it has a larger monitor and keyboard. Also, having to use the touchpad for long periods of time is a major pain.

again, when i am home i put the TR on a stand, plug in the usb hub, and voila, desktop with full keyboard sans giant monitor. i dont miss the larger monitors at all, as they cant be good for ur brain cells. not that the massive qtys of beer and smokes are, but hey, at least its not radiation zoomies. i even chucked my TV now that i have a digital projector. the next thing that’s going is the stereo…but it’s an antique kenwood that still has analog meters and knobs and probally tubes…it just looks cool. but i can see that in a few years the entire home entainment system and the computing system will be based on a subnotebook that i can pack up and take with me when i travel. but that’s just me.

Me I love it but can’t staaand the jog-dial-thingies in the middle of the keyboard. yuck!
i agree with tif, the touchpad on the tr is one of the best i’ve ever used. i really like the vertical scroll feature…do all touchpads have that?
Dunno about all but the touchpad on my friends Toshiba laptop did support it. I however dont think it could simulate the back and front buttons of the browser.
