Any one knoe if TR can handle Adobe Premier Pro or is it not powerful enuf. Have heard need at least 2 Ghz processor.

Also if that is the case whats the best software to use for video editing on the Tr

It’s definitely possible.

I’m using Adobe Premiere Pro on my TR1 and it works like a charm. My setup is my TR1 connected to a 80GB 7200RPM (8MB cache) external firewire hard disk. My DV camera is then connected to the hard disk via another firewire cable.

I’ve been capturing pretty long clips (60-90 minutes) and then editing them with Premiere Pro and it all works pretty well. I don’t ever drop any frames and the system is responsive even when you’re rendering long clips. Having 1GB of memory probably helps the most when you’re dealing with the larger clips.

Nope. I use my TR’s screen for nearly every task. Occasionally, I hook it up to a 19” CRT to test some of the websites I’m working on to check for color inconsistencies and different resolutions.

How does your set up work with the dv cam directly to external hard disk - is that a feature of premier pro?

How do you get 2 firewire ports on the hard disk?

I figured the best way to explain is with a few pix.

First of all, Firewire (or IEEE1394 or i.Link) technology allows you to daisy chain firewire devices to each other without the need of a hub (unlike USB) provided the devices themselves have more than one port. So, this is a feature of Firewire and Windows and not Premiere Pro. All Premiere Pro does is let you import/edit/export video.

So, my external HDD case has two 6-pin firewire ports and one USB (type-B) 2.0 port. This is just a feature of the product that I bought. Some may have this many while others may not. You’ll have to search for the right model for you. I basically built mine since I wanted control over the parts. I’m using a Western Digital 80GB 8MB cache model with OtherWorldComputing’s Mercury Elite Pro case.

The Sony TR has a single 4-pin firewire port so I have a 4-pin to 6-pin cable connecting my TR to my external HDD. My Sony PCR-DC5 miniDV camera also uses a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable and connects to my external HDD.

So, my TR recognizes both devices in Windows Explorer with the drive showing up as another drive letter and the DV camera showing up in the imaging devices (next to the motion eye camera).

Premiere Pro allows me to capture footage directly off the DV camera and onto the external hard disk without any problems.

How many gigabytes of hard disc space does 60-90 mins of videos take up?

Funny you should ask that. I just recently converted a 97 minute LaserDisc into DV and it took up a nice 21GB chunk of disk space. :shock:

An update on my project with Premiere Pro on my TR. I setup a 97 minute DV capture with 15 markers (to be translated into chapter points) and tried out Premiere Pro’s Export-to-DVD function. I started the process at 7:30pm Thursday night and it finished Friday morning at 10:20am. Yeah, nearly 15 hours. So, there’s a process that brings my TR to its knees. At least the system wasn’t completely locked up and I could still surf the web and check e-mail.

Part of the slowness of the process was that some how Premiere Pro (henceforth PP) decided to use my TR’s hard disk as the scratch disk even though I swear I set it to use my faster 7200RPM external drive with larger 8MB cache. At any rate, it completed without pooping out and next time I’ll set the caches/scratch disks properly. Also, it certainly helped having 1GB of memory installed as I was pushing 800MB of memory being used. Had I only had 512MB it would taken forever as there would have been major disk swapping occuring.

It is a hell of a process and we only do it on our desktop, and never more than 40mins at a time.
When will they develop a faster process of putting dv onto dvd?
I am not sure either that the full quality is maintained, but maybe I am wrong. What format do you save your finished effort in?
I have to add we have only used ulead so far.

Is Vegas video a better option then. Which is the best to get?

In this situation, I made a full DVD with chapter breaks. But any way you do it, it is a painful thing to do…even on fast systems. I’ve also used Sonic’s MyDVD which is faster but it’s only good if you’ve already setup your clips and just want something to put it all together. I’m going to continue playing with other programs. I think TMPGEnc might be a faster encoder…

At any rate, I still like Premiere Pro for editing and exporting to “other” formats like Quicktime and MPG4. It works well and you can really make some professional looking stuff with it.
